just love guys that open up their first post with an off topic post. that roasting used to be for everyone that came on the board and because its gone we now have a bunch of thin skinned ass holes here. come on you know who you are!
now before you look at my member number 2000 I was 48 HEMI number 91 before that.

the reason for this post is I'm thinking off all the FAKE STUFF IN RODDING. almost every fake item you can think of was an inovation by some rodder and was cool the first time or two that we saw them. some things are here forever out of convience or cost. but there are some things that should have never been sold (sorry Don Garlits and Gennie Shifter)how about a list of the "so phony they stinks" items and then the ones that are cool as long as we're the ones using them, catagories
help me with a list I'll start with some of the obvious stuff

FAKE STUFF

plastic cars, trailer queen rodders, air bags (to look cool) phoney floor shifters, dummy spots, portawalls(traddition since the 50's) updated injection and fake injection, dummy blowers, valve covers, side pipes, paint that looks like primer, multiple carbs with half ormore blocked off (also a tradition)

take it away http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Fake Buick drums over disc brakes.
Fuzzy dice that your girlfriend didn't knit herself.
Re-pop Caddy tail lights.
"Spider" hub caps.
"Chrome wheel" hub caps.
Cutouts on stock manifolds just to make noise.
Flame throwers.
Taiwan "Necker Knobs" that break off if you actually use them.
Pin stripe decals.
Magnetic flames.

Club jackets and plaques you didn't/don't belong to.
Faux finish rusty "old" paint jobs, remind me of "stone washed, acid washed pre-ripped designer jeans.
(Unless the OWNER is the one who did the faux finish old look, then it's like wearing out your own jeans so they look like the designer jeans...Then it is a personal artistic statement..)
Primering over "good" shiny paint, just for "the look".

I disagree on the Gennie shifter though, and not just because I have one.
It is a legit answer to needing a shifter in a car or truck that came with a floor shift and now has an automatic but retains the stock column....
Unless you put automatic trannys on your list too!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I wear Dickies pants only because they are within my budget, still, and that's a surprize since you're right about the Gucci designer thing, I'm shocked they haven't gone sky high in price.
I remember when they inflated the already high price of Levi's from $3.96 to $4.10... That was horrific!

ya doc, take surplus cargo pants as an example...that shit use to cost $13 in 1988...now its $30 at surplus stores. look at dockers/old navy(??)... they are cashing in on the cargo pants, same thing with doc M's, chained wallets, dyed hair, piercings, and tatts. maybe someday people will pay for grease stained 501's? hot topics, ripped stone washed *punk* jeans, $80... hehe

$4.10 for levis?? shit man... when was that? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I cant stand stand dummy spots, especially when there mounted in such a stupid position that they couldnt function if they were real. if it was mounted half way out on the fender you would have to reach under the dash into the engine compartment to adjust it.

My vote are the kits to make SBCs look like anything but what they are. There is nothing wrong with a SBC in a trad ride if it is decked out in period garb. If you want a flathead or hemi, Buy a flathead or hemi.

How's about dummy quick change covers on anything but a real QC, even the ones that cover up banjo rears........

Fake blower scoops glued to the hood
4-doors with the rear two welded shut
visors on galaxies
wire-wheel hubcaps
magnetic flames
and ditto on the blocked off multi-carb setups

I gotta say though, there is nothing wrong with airbags. Its not all about "looking cool", its about being able to make the car driveable on shit roads (most roads) and into driveways and over speed bumps and still have it low when you can. Its all about driving your car, but you can't drive a car most places when its permanently 2"'s off the ground with very reduced suspension travel.

1958-1959...
I was a greaser in the fifth grade, didn't get a haircut at all in the sixth grade ('59-60) and played an Elvis impersonator in a school play. I usta draw floating bloody eyeballs with ornate daggers through them on everything then. Didn't know why. Might have seen a copy of a Von Dutch or maybe a parallel art thing. I didn't do the winged eyeballs though, cuz other kids did those and I wanted to be different!

I just bought some Dickie Shorts, the shorter shorts, not the Cholo shorts that come to the top of my socks with my short legs. They were like $17 ? I think, at The Doughboys on Artesia in Bellflower.

That would be ok If I had had the original lever, I traded it off still attached to the fourspeed crash box. I considered making the shifter but all my plans kept looking like the Gennie shifter anyway and time was worth way more than money then since I was working full time AND going to graduate school. I did carve an adapter out of a chuk of aluminum and adapt the original GMC parking brake lever to the gennie shifter mount, and made brackets at the rear to mount up the ten bolt's P-brake cables to the frame. Does that earn me a stay of execution? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

On the four door with only the rear handles welded up...
That reeks of "I really wish it was a two door"
Shave all four or leave all four!

I don't see what's phony about the repop caddy lights just because they didn't come off a caddy, they still work the same. They're cheap and plentiful which is great but that's why they're way too common, and I'm part of the problem since I use them. I don't have a flame kit, but I want one for tailgaters. I agree with the rest of the list.

The dummy spot thing sucks, so do unhooked lakes pipes. I'm taking my fucking dummy spots off my '54 Chevy during the next go around on redoing the top. I'm putting in a '47 Plymouth back window, which in itself could be considered fake.
Here's a couple more for your awesome list oldcarglassholeguy, fake hood pins and the worst one in my estimation, fake jockey shifters. That shit just burns me up.

The welding up of the back doors is annoying but I will give the 'over the pond' guys a little leeway. They don't have the choice we have, so they've gotta make do. But some of them Swede mothers do the job right, they're hacked up 4 doors actually look like real original 2 doors.

And Dr. Knobchieze was not fake.

If anyone knows someone with a 67-8 Camaro that wants to be "real" I have a set of doors with about 20 real bullet holes. Blown all to hell. 30.06. Tell everyone that they came off Bonnie & Clyde's grandson son Leroy's death car. In about 1978 bought Camaro wrecked to salvage parts for 34 5w I was building. Before I could sell the good parts I didnt need for 34 my little brother used doors for target practice. Any takers? Cheap!

Here's an example of FAKE. You'll note no throttle cables, but that's OK as you scan the solid plate carb adapter, then count the spacers, etc.
