Hello everyone!

I'm just being curious here. Anyone ever tried to import a 'glass body to Canada. I know the custom laws say no fiberglass cars allowed in, not even race cars, but what about bodies only?

I know there's a way to do it because I keep seeing guys who imported Cobra or dune buggy bodies. Are bodies considered auto parts? Does it depend on the custom agent's mood on that day?

No fiberglass cars in Canada? Is that right?
I find it hard to believe that there isn't at least ONE Corvette in Canada..

I brought a Fiberglas Austin Bantum body in from Detroit a couple years ago.Showed the hand written reciept, paid the GST and PST.Done!
If you were having it shipped to you from outside Canada, then you would need to have a Customs Broker handle the paper work at the border.
Or buy it from one of the Fiberglas body manufacturers in Ontario.

Al, there is a Cobra 'fabricator' in Ste-Julienne (Pigeon Performance), 40 minutes from Montreal. I can't remember if he actually builds the bodies or is a dealer?

They might not allow them in to the country but they sure let a shit load of them out. all those ugly cost to cost 39 ford? convertibles are from canada. And now a company called Wild Rides is produecing glass body in canada also. so it sure seems wierd you can't have one shipped in.

There is also someone in Canada who makes carbon-fibre Deuce roadster bodies and they ain't cheap!I guess you could LEGALLY get away with one of those 'cause there really isn't any GLASS fibre in the body!

I didn't know this post would end up being this funny! I guess the govt though that if they kept us from importing 'glass bodies, we'd buy those lame ass atempt at a hot rod and help the economy.

CharlieLed: Corvettes are on 'The List' an so, they can be imported. The problem is not with 'glass but with the part of the law that says: 'no fiberglass kit cars'.

UnklIan: I though you only needed a broker if you were importing a complete car, not parts.

Whizzerick: That dildomobile is funny as hell! Pigeon, in Ste-Julienne is making the bodies as far as I know. Nice to see another Montrealer in here!

You can also try to find the law on importing vehicules. I read it and it clearly says; 'No kit cars'.

If you have one, you'll be able to register it without a problem though. In fact my first car was a dune buggy and was fiberglass, so they're legal. Were your cars made in Canada or imported a long time ago?

It's really kinda funny to see how some of the laws are written in different areas. When I was young, growing up in the Midwest, they still had "blue laws" on the books. One law in Ohio said that while travelling on any state road after dusk, you had to have a person walking 50 feet ahead of you carrying a lantern. It's funny until some hard-ass cop writes you up for one of these stupid laws "just because he can"...

Bienvenue to the HAMB, mon cher Mojo.
Always happy to plaster a dildo on an unsuspecting truck...

CharlieLed, 20 minutes from my house (in Ontario), I could build the fenderless, hoodless '27 I've been picturing in my mind... If I where to drive one here, the Sureté du Québec would have a Fistfucking party with ME in the sling holding a can of Crisco... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Busted! How the heck did you find out I speak french! I can believe I have an accent when I write :-)

As for mandatory equipment, don't forget about fullsize bumpers, windshield wipers, window defoging/defrosting, windshield washer system, turn signals, side markers and probably a few more things.

I did see a few guys running without front fenders and a lot running hoodless. They must have removed that crap after the inspection. Do you know how tolerant the Crisco patrol can be about that.

As for your '27, what are you looking for. There's an ad on lespacs.com about a roadster body with fenders for around 1200$ I believe.

I don't think you're interpreting whatever you read correctly. Some provinces have a problem with people registering "kit cars as year of manufacture, ie: you can't register a kit car as a 1932 Ford for instance. I'd suggest you join CSRA and talk to Ken Kroaker the rep that monitors these laws across the country. He'll be able to clarify things for you. Believe me! There is no law that says "No kit cars"

Ragtop is right, Mojo. There is a way to get around whatever 'definition' of 'kit car' they are referring to.
The real question is: why on earth would you be interested in a kit car? Are you thinking of building a Fiero based Testarossa??? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

And by the way, I'm a french speaking also, from the Plateau...
We have a cousin from France here also, Etienne from Empire32. Check out his stuff at

I was thinking more like a T body. I don't think that the custom agents see the difference between a Fiero based Testarossa and a T body. I've heard that all fiberglass bodies are kit cars to them, which would be logical on a legal standpoint.

Section 2 of the List of vehicules admissible from the United States by Transport Canada Clearly state that Kit cars newer than 15 years are not admissible for importation, even though registering them would be a breeze.

I know that fiberglass cars are legal and that they can be brought in, but I also know that it's a pain in the ass.

Look at my other post. It looks like TC (Transports Canada) even closed a Cobra importer.

You can buy T bucket bodies all day long around the Toronto/southern Ontario region for around $500-700 bucks.all day long...I even know a fella who pops 3-window 34 fords for about $4000.00...good structure and fine form......those are Canadian rubles too!!!..Ramrod is a start...
