Well.the chassis is all finished(will post new pics soon).next problem..... HEADERS AND EXHAUST.
I have decided to forgo the HOT HEADS block hugger headers..gonna make a custom set....here is the query;
I was reading the post on the flathead zoomies and would love to run them but I believe Johnnee law would nabbed me before I left the driveway.
How do some guys get away with the zoomies?...baffles? and if so what kind?
I saw the latest R&C cover car(gold-bronze duece) with some kind of baffeled exhaust/header....How much restriction does put on the engine?
My 392 is a 600 hp motor....do you think this will do more harm than good?
I may have to create pipes that burble and spill outside the framerails and tuck back in.....and I was considering a lakes/bonneville type of header, but I only have 4" clearence from plate to bottom of door.
Alot of ?, I know.....need some of the HAMB's thoughts.....kinda hit the wall.

a friend of mine ran Harley baffles in the end of his zoomies on his SBC power 32 p/u but it was still LOUD! on the FnA i have tossed around a few ideas in my head about havign a smaller tube (drilled FULL of holes) inside each zoomy tube, then pack some type of fiber glass or steel wool between the two and have a screw on cap a few inched in fromt he end of the outer tube to kinda make it look like just one tube. don't know if it's been done or how well it'll work but it's an idea. you could also build your own baffles inside the zoomy tubes if you cut the tube in half and had little plates to direct the flow back and forth, over and around them. that might quiet it down a bit. thats about all a muffler does right?? look inside a muffler ans see what kinda concepts you can borrow from it and fit inside each zoomy pipe.

get with sandman-he runs baffles in his headers on his flatty (not quite a hemi) but it sounds good, and I think the place he got them had all kinds (?)

Looked at a 33 Plymouth sedan the other day, used to be a tow car for a top fuel dragster in the 60s. Has a really healthy HEMI with stock cast manifolds. They ground , polished then HPC coated them. Looked killer, like some custom cast block huggers. Soon to be finished car.......OLDBEET

Heres My thoughts on your exhaust. If that Hemi is a real 600 HP you have big compression big roller or solid lifter cam big valves and lots o portwork. This being the case you better not hold back on the exhaust at all. That motor is gonna want to breathe easy.A poor exhaust will not only take away HP but the exhaust will get REAL hot from ecessive back pressure. If it was mine I would custom build some headers and run 3" exhaust with 3" delta flowmasters all the way to the rear. With a freeflowing x before the muffs.I see no cheap way out without losing HP. ---Feder

I dont have my spec sheet handy.here are some details on the engine.....the builder (Tim Banning, of FORHEMISONLY.COM)
The engine has been stroked and bored....422 cu inc...eagle rods(alum.)
J&E pistons-10:1 the heads are HOGGED-OUT completly and run hydralic lifters..for street abilty...I thought I had the head pics on this computer, but the pics are on my studio machine..His head work was unbelieable.like jewlery......I think Feder you answered my questions....I was just trying to have form with function.....function is far more important.
Tim has told me time and time again to run the excat exhaust system...3" with a flowmaster -type exhaust....way too much $$$$$ has been spent to fuck it up.
Afeela just has to ask... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'd like to see your head pics if I can. My 392 heads are former race heads, so they've got huge ports in them too. I layed a stock exhaust gasket over them, and the port was almost 1/4" bigger all the way around. The headers I'm building will have 2" primary tubes, and I'll probably run 3" pipe from there back. 3" is a tad big for my bender though, so I thought about making 2 headers per side, and running 4 pipes back with 2 1/2" pipe. I think I'd loose a little bit of the header effect , but I doubt I'd notice the lost performance.

Also, there's a guy on e-bay selling block huggers for around $125. Seems cheap for Hemi headers. Might make a good temporary solution.

I'd be interested in seeing your head work.
I have a set of old fuel heads that have basicaly the same size valve for the intake and exhaust...big.

ZOOOOOOMMIEESS!!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

(My bro-in-law runs zoomies with Harley baffles on a SBC...makes it sound like a top fuel does through your TV speaker...a slightly muffled poping at idle...and a good ROAR when you're on it!

No tickets yet, but it ain't logged many miles that way, either!

I seem to remember in street rodder last year sometime there was a featured car that was a yellow high-tech roadster with zoomie headers that had a sliding baffle system built into them.... flip a switch and they were open - flip it back and they went out the muffled rear exhaust.... anyone remember the maker of the headers?

evilfordcoupe ran open zoomies on his hemi and they didn't seem all that loud at idle... ask him

That's one pretty motor!

Do what the builder says. You've trusted him this far...

Whatever you do, record it when you fire it up. Love to hear that monster.
