View Full Version : Nameing a show car...Traditional or just kind of silly
roadstar

I know cars have been given names by there owners for many years. And some of the most famous show car ever built have names like Ala Cart, Beatnik Bandit, Revolver. Grand Master ect.
so I have been kicking around naming my latest car that I will be showing this year in the Detroit Autorama.
I have had more than a few cars and have never named one. I always thought it was silly.
But this car is real nice and I thought it would be cool to have a 'Show" name for it to put on the sighn, jsut for shits and giggles.
So what I need is input on what to name this car and some abuse about actually wanting to name a car http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Hear is the car tell me what it looks like to you as far as names go.

I've named most of my project cars...
(actually calling them LOTS of names durring late night wrenching sessions! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)
I think it's kinda cool...it's part of what I miss about drag racing...it was cooler when the funny cars had names like Chi-Town Hustler instead of just corporate sponsors!
As for show cars...they almost NEED names! That helps to give them an identity...make a reference to the Red Baron, or Crazy Horse, or The Orange Crate and people know right away what car you're talking about...SO much easier and cooler than saying "that car that looks like a helmet with guns", or "that gleaming gold plated yellow Hemi powered Altered" or "the 32 with the flip-up body"....knowwhutImean???

REALLY!! and i don't see anything wrong with namin a car. i've met people i like alot less than some cars and they have names http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif. Jimmy (as in Smith or "JEEM") named my model A, "FnA". he just started refering to it as that and it stuck. it's painted on the shift knob now so i can't change it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. (i'll show you the knob when i get it in the mail. it is KEWL!!!)....

Your '40 has one very unusual feature -- the windshield, its divider post and trim appear to be from a woodie or convertible, rather than the typical coupe/sedan windshield as shown on the Standard a couple of posts below your first one. I'm surprised at this very subtle change on an otherwise stock-bodied car (neat, though).
I'd be tempted to name it "Henry".

Love that lettering!Whoever did the work is GOOD!Oh yeah! A name:If you wanted to go a little modern you could call it,"Rued Star" or maybe,"Setz Rite" or if you gave it to your son it could be called,"Race'Ride" or"Race' Riot"or you could paint some licks on it and call it,"Flambeau-Yant"........or you could just leave it alone 'cause it's nice just the way it is.JMHO

Beautiful car Rudy -- funny, the only things that jumped out were those pedals and the wheel, and you dealt with those in your next post. I agree car names are kind of a personal thing, the best ones wouldn't work on a show sign without a paragraph explaining where they came from. I just got back from the "Oakland" roadster show (whose name also needs a lengthy explination) and all the names on show signs were pretty lame. Coming up with a good one is gonna be a challenge... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

We all like roadstar - so what about a synonym to it?
Take one word from this first list (synonyms to road) and then one from the second list (synonyms to star) and create a new one! Ex. "Street Light"
alley, artery, asphalt, avenue, back street, boulevard, byway, cobblestone, concrete, conservation road, corduroy road, course, crossroad, direction, drag, dragway, drive, expressway, grid road, highway, ice bridge, lane, line, main drag, main line, parking lot, parkway, passage, pathway, pavement, pike, roadway, route, street, subway, tarmac, terrace, thoroughfare, throughway, thruway, track, trail, turnpike, viaduct, way

Ok...thesaurasus.com doesn't have any synonyms to star..WTF...so make up your own. You get the idea.

I'm not into nameing a vehicle or even a small boat (I had to name my kids). I also don't need any flowers on/in my rig, dolls and/or stuffed animals, cartoons, or pastel paint colors. My wife & daughters would like that, but I still have some male hormones running through me (reduced amount......but still there).
Just call it "The Black 40."

I wouldn't worry about naming it, I've never really named any of my cars, My Dad calls my bird "Blackie". At one time I had two of those things and named them Heckle and Jeckle, after the black cartoon crowes but it didn't stick.
I think a car has to have something really unique for the name to stick. It would have to involve the split windshield, the roll & pleats, the copper color contrasts, the ribbed bumpers, or even the raked stance. The car's freaking beautiful, but I can't think of name that would do it justice and still be descrptive of what it is other than Rudy's 40.

The reason show cars like the Rose etc. get named is to attract attention.

Everyone/Every car's a pretender.
Car names are like titles on Art work. They can set a varbal mood in motion for the viewer, or they can be simply a method of cataloging that's more imaginative and rememberable than "Untitled # 1247"
Imagine if we had to remember a car by something like "Barris Custom #1247" instead of "AlaKart"?
People would be saying "What did you think of "Cushenbery Custom #7" instead of "What did you think of Cushenbery's "Matador"?
Or "I really liked that '40 Ford, Barris Custom #746!" and the personyour talking to says, "You dummy! Barris Custom #746 was a '48 Studebaker, You must be thinking of # 748!"
See, names are an easy way for people to recognize what other people are talking about when they identify a car by name rather than number or a long verbal description.

I don't often agree with DrJ, in fact mostly never, http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif BUT his point is exactly what Roadstar and I were talking about. The 40 HAS to be refered to as something. Way too many 40's running around to distingish one from another. Even if he didn't put it's name on a sign, he still needs to start refering to it by a name.
I do like the name Road Star with maybe a shooting star in the background or corner of the sign and I do also like Steel Tux with the sign done in black and white with a touch of copper accents. Maybe the front of a tux in the background of the sign. Can you just picture Rudy walking around the Autorama all weekend with one of those stupid fake tuxedo t-shirts on. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Weren't these cars known for their moon shine carrying abilities back in the day?
If so, you gotta', gotta' do something w/ that theme. Ain't nuthin cooler than corn licker.
If I had an old black Ford, (or black whatever) with some copper appointments, and I'd had it long enough to 'break it in" and get comfortable wearing it around town, I'd be tempted to call it "Penny Loafer".
Now some might think that meant it was slow, but it's strictly in reference to the shoe we all wore in the 50's and 60's and put pennys in the tops of them. and the cool one's were always black.
Now I'm more of a cruiser than a racer (although some diehard never seen a passing gear cruiser friends of mine would disagree) so I might be able to get behind a title like that where's a die hard drag racer might not.
They might wear different shoes from me I guess.

some names have been
72 riviera:prissy (damn thing didnt like to start)
61 coupe deville: alice, some chick called it alice one day and it kinda stuck
the 50 never got a name. i guess since i didnt build it i didnt feel right driving it let alone naming it.
and the new biscayne got named the moldy biscuit by the parts girl from napa when i asked her to get me some parts
i think cars should have girls names. like the 40 i would name after some preety in the face fat chick i knew. cause thats kinda what the 40 reminds me of http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif but thats my .02 worth

VERY nice ride there...that windshield post looks great that way...naming them is a personal thing, but sometimes a name from someone else just sticks...
my cars almost always had names, some in good taste, some were not.
51 coupe was "annie"....kinda like the earlier post up there above, where this lil gal called it that and it stuck...
'59 biscayne went through several...butch bitch (after I found out the guy I bought it from was a flamer, the bad kind), moving violation (nothing on it was legal, I even took the tags off and ran without them for 6 months just to prove I could, never got pulled over even with the open exhaust runnin through lake pipes, all the kool stuff was either dangerous or stolen, defnately stupidity at its worst), reflector collector (road reflectors had somethin to do with this the day a friend at school put his 13" wires on it and we took it for a drive) before finally being named corvecayne and never going anywhere again...
the 47' chevy that sat for a couple years was "lulabelle" because thats what the elderly lady whom i had to get to sign the replacement title told me her kids named it back in 1956..
the 56 chieftain is "Jezebel", because a certain lil redheaded chick I know named it that...
66 dodge polara I drove in High School was "Marilyn" because the two humps on the dash reminded me of Ms Monroe's tits...
the very first vehicle I ever had, a yellow/white/orange 1963 Ford Econoline with green shag carpet and metallic green seats, black dash with kraco radio was "piece of hippie sh*t"
the '61 comet I owned twice (1999 and again in 1999) was called the "vomit" by the same guy both times, who later turned out to be a bad renter and jerk who sells your stuff while you are living out of state...
both ex wives had completely different names for my rides than I did, usually because of jealous reasons...
it seems to me, people have always named their rides...something about the love with one's vehicle...I guess it comes from the days when people named their horses...
