Anybody ever tried running port-a-walls on radial tires? I know they say you're not supposed to, but if we never tried things we're not supposed to.........Anyways, I talked to an old timer who used to run a local service station, he said they worked great until you hit a curb with 'em. Of course, this was before the advent of radials.

They seem to push out from the rim.And they flap alot cuz the radials bulge so much on the bottom.
get out the grinder and make some.......Shiny

I've ran them, and haven't had much luck. They break, and also wear out the sidewalls of the tires. Dean

I have had "as GOOD as can be expected luck" with port O walls. I have had two sets and each lasted long enough to satisfy my needs. The only real problems I encountered where that the outer lip of the pow cuts a groove into the white layer of the radial and when you finally remove the pow's you have a white line worn into your tire. Nothing a little black paint won't fix.
I used pow's on two of my split window VW vans and put ALOT of miles on them, I live in the city don't always have a lot of time to parallel park. Nothing will do your pow's in faster than a curb, they tear at the rim then flap around and tear more until they are a big flappy mess.
Lastly DO NOT get gasooline on them and Do buy a nice, new set as those old swap meet sets are OLD and i had a friend whom had horrible luck with them. I used the kind that said "atlas" "14"
When you mount them up take some time and get them to lay flat on the tire, with the tire deflated just work them at the rim with your palm until they are seated nice and evenly between the tire and rim and then air em up.
Good Luck...

I run Atlas ones too.....Have to run tubes..cos hard cornering will make them shift and relese a bit of air so you get a flat....hand sand the back edge that sits on the tyre really smooth, to lessen how much they cut into your tyre....and keep them clean and once a week spray a tyre cleaner/lube spray on them..if they get un lubbed they go brown on the edges....Hit a kurb and they are bin fodder...
Mine last about a year at a time...

usually its just as cheep to have white walls grinded in your radils .like they all said the rip, flap and eat your side walls up.so in the long run it would be wiser to just grind the white walls in or buff

I have been running a set of atlas flaps on michelin radials for about 2 years.I put rubber grease between the tyre and the flap and It stops it cutting the sidewall too much

Ok take a quess http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I let the air out and whack em back in shape with out removing the tire. To me port-a-walls were as much a dress up item as a chrome air cleaner. I had them mounted on my first car before it got tagged and insured.
I used to run them before they started making the www radials. They worked fine but had a tendency to fly off at 80 MPH.

One time we were flyin down the highway and one of the guys in our group (he was in front of me) got on the CB asking if I was running porta walls. When asked why he said one had just passed him. Kinda funny .
