Model A/Early Ford Accesory Radio-Ever see one?

I was recently rummaging through my collection-o-crap nd stumbled upon this radio. From what I have read it was an over the counter option for Model A's and Early V8 fords. Ever see one? Does anyone know what it is worth?

That's pretty cool. That's an early one that straped to the steering column. I don't know the market for these old radios. I paid 40 bucks for this newer model Motorola that mounts under the dash. The radio vendor claims he can convert it to AM/FM.

Spooky, are there tubes(on an amp) and a receiver under the wood speaker? If not, you may have some serious hunting to do. The dial is a cool setup. Tommy, you always have the best stuff.

Looks like a factory '32 speaker and control head. The actual radio receiver and amplifier was in a steel box under the floor on one side of the drive shaft. There was a motor/generator power supply in a similar box on the other side. Each box was about the size of a 6v battery and required cutting the floor pan for the mounting flanges and lids. I think there was an antenna that mounted under the running board, but I'm not sure about that. Somebody told me the radio cost about 1/4 the price of a new '32 Ford. If that's true, they must not have been very popular.

HOLY SHIT! i did'nt think they had portable radios back then. someone just joked about a model A having the "original radio" guess he did'nt realize it either.

Re49 is right on the facts here. Original cost was $49.50, I think a new deuce cost maybe 5 or 6 times that...
My '32 standard tudor has the floor cuts and running board antenna holes for that--but all parts are long gone. No idea what it's worth--you have maybe a third of a radio there, but those are the visible parts.

I know that complete radios that mount to the firewall and have a remote head to control it can sell for $200 - $500 on ebay.

The others are right in that you don't have the "radio" part. You just have the speaker and the control head. If you just said vintage radio speaker and head, you could probably get $50 - $100 for that. If you put "DEUCE 1932 RAT ROD BILLET STREET ROD E&J VINTAGE SPEED RADIO"
who knows how many crazy people would bid on it.


This is an old Majestic Auto Radio that is just the radio part. No head or speaker. It went for $34 on ebay.

Here is an old ford radio meant for 34-36 open cars. Once again, no head, but has built in speaker. Went for $102 in un-restored condition.

I think the column mount part is pretty neat, but Philco has column mount heads on ebay all the time. Philco and that head were among many radio builders that made authorized accessory radios for the cars. Here is one that went for $20 on ebay. The key on it was so you could lock out the radio and people couldn't sit in your car and listen to tunes, running down your battery while you were away.

PS - I have a set of those under running board antennas for my '37 Plymouth, and the reception is really bad! AM radio reception doesn't like to look under cars to find the antenna!
