View Full Version : My mom was in a real bad wreck....I'm goin to be gone soon.

Last thursday my mom who I live with was in a bad wreck, she was on her way home, it was just dark, She came around a corner in her 94 infiniti J30 and there was a semi backin his trailer into a road the goes to his trailer park. the truck was in such a fasion that his lights and the cab was still in his lane and the trailer was accross the entire road. Well I guess my mom was lookin at the lights that she must of thought was coming toward her and she NEVER saw the trailer. It was a dry cement trailer with the three hoppers underneather it. Well she ran right under the trailer at around 55 mph, never slowed down. Smashed the roof. The tank on the trailer was like 9 inches from the back of the drivers seat. She hit the middle hopper so the car didn't go all the way under it. After they cut the roof and door off the get her out it took till midnight to get her car out from under the trailer. My mom was flown from the wreck to richland memorial in columbia. When we arived we were told my mom had sustained an unsurvivable head injury. That she was braindead.. We all went in to see her, it was the most horifying thing I ever saw, I couldn't recognize my mom, her head was so swolen it was the size of a medium sized pumpkin. I fell out then and everything for the next day was a blur. The organ donor vulcures were askin me and my two sisters questions almost instantly. Friday morning they came and told us that they noticed a few things that may indicate that she had a little activity in her brain and that we had to decide weather to do a surgury to remove the masive blood clot on the left side of her brain. He said if it was his own mother that he wouldn't do it. That there was only a 50% chance she would make it through the surgury and only 10 to 15% chance she would be able to have a purposfull life and not be a vegtible. We chose to do the surgury... after 2 days passed there were no changes, they told us we had to make a decision weather to take her off the ventalator or have a surgury for a trake and peg tube. But they advised us against the surjury becasue they said pretty much that she wasn't goin to get any better, that the rest of her body was so healthy that she could live up to 30 years as a vegtible. We chose to take her off of the ventalator but against there wishes we wanted to wait till the next day so we could all be there with her. We were schedualed to take her off the vent at 9am well at 8am my mom decided to hold up 2 fingers for the nurse and was answering yes and no questions but noding!!! So obviously we went ahead and did the surgury. The Neorosurgins said that my mom had the worst head trama they had ever seen since they been there since 1977. And that they don;t understand why she is doin as good as she is. Well the next day, the swelling went down ALOT. And she would barly open her right eye for just a second. At first they said she was blind in both eyes, then just the left one now she can see out of both but she hasn't opened her left eye by herself. But I can talk to her and she knows who I am and mouthed to me "Cole I love you" she is on alot of pain medication, and she had a suruery yesterday to repair her left arm that is broke in two places. Today they told us she had pnemonia and that it was common and they were treating it. She has so far surprised EVERYONE there. They just don't understand it. I just want all yall to pray for my mom. Its helped so far. We all know that we are probably goin to have to take care of her for the rest of her life. But thats ok. I am takin over the house insurance and all the utilities. So that being I am goin to go back to work tomarow. Tonight is the first night I been back home. And I'll prolly drive to see here after work. I am probably goin to have the phones shut off and the internet canceled. I have a cell phone so I'll just keep that on. If anyone needs to get in touch with me my cell phone number is 803-682-1152 and please don't give my number to spamers. Anyways please pray for my mom. and I'll be back one day. Take it easy cole. I'll be around for a few days maybe

My mom is the most stuborn hard headed women I ever met. She is REALLY strong. and her favorite thing to do is argue and prove everyone wrong. The doctors said she is one of the strongest they have seen. They said they wouldn't be suprised if she got up and ran down the hall. I think me goin back to work is goin to be good. I have cryed so much in the last week from the ups and downs I don't think I have any tears left, I was almost numb feeling. like it was all a bad dream. But she is doin good and I put my mom in Gods hands and he is takin good care of her.

well he was charged with wrongfull backin and backin into an intersection. We got a really good lawyer to take the case. We should have enough to take care of her forever. HE said it should be well into the 7 digits. 1/3 of that goes to the lawer, and around a 1/4 of that should go into my moms rehabilitation. The rest for whatever my mom wants. She always wanted to be finainially in good shape, and most likly she will be.

Just keep talking to her and encouraging her, it's tough, but after a while the hospital crap fades into the background.
When my g'father was in CICU, I would put the date and time on a dry erase board were he could see it, I put the date and the time I was coming back (visiting hours) That way he had plans to do something, he said it helped.

Everything has been said already...
Terribly sorry that the accident happened but congratulations on having such a hard headed mom and Kudos for making all the right decisions for her recovery. With these kind of injuries, how she reacted in the first couple days usually set the tone for the rest of her recovery. So she's winning the war.

Spudz-
3 Months ago my sister died for 6 minutes with lack of oxygen to the brain due to a massive heart attack. She was in a coma for roughly a month and showed little if any signs of any brain activity for the doctors. She was awake and somewhat alert often during the coma and spent a lot of time communicating with our family and myself. The doctors never once saw these great signs.
We had a meeting after about a month in intensive care and the doctors informed us that she was a vegetable and it was time to begin thinking about "quality of life issues."
With everyone's positive attitudes, wishes, hopes and prayers. My sister is sitting at home right now chatting with me on a laptop. She walks with a walker, has memory issues, but she rocks and rolls like no other. She's all there and in some ways stronger than before.
If you'd like to read the entire story I can gladly provide it, it will provide you hope and give you an idea of the things to come and what to expect.
A doctor's job is to expect the worse, yours and all of ours is to expect the best. My prayers are with you and if there is anything I can help with please let me know. I will extend the same positive thoughts to all those that helped with my sister. I've been through the exact same thing the last few months. I wish I had read this post earlier...
Keep a positive attitude and be strong for your family.

you all don't know how much all of this means to me. I'm tearing up as I type this. I told my mom that people all over the world, people she has never even met or spoken to are praying for her. She smilled opened one eye and shook her head yes. She is doing really good. She was moved to PCU "progressive care unit" and we can see her anytime we want from 9am to 9pm. She actually talked over the trake today, she looked down at her arm and the pins in her wrist and said "we've got to do something about this shit". She can't open her left eye. I think her muscle is really weak. Thats where the impact was. The doctors said she was blind in that eye, but guess what... now she can see out of it. She can't hold it open by herself but there is sight. She seems confused. A little disorintated. I'm not sure if she knows everybody. Its like she thinks she knows but isn't sure. But its only been 2 WEEKS!!! the doctors said she has done more than most minor injurys do in a year. She is hopefully goin to go to a rehabilitation place in NC that will really help her. She is doing nothing but getting better so our spirits are high. This IS ALOT to have dumped onto me. I just turned 18 on July 31st. I figure it took about 4 minutes for me to grow up and take on resposibilities when this happened. I just can't say how much all of your prayers mean to me! I've been on the HAMB since I was 12 or 13. And I love you all as family. And if I do shut of the internet, its not forever!

It's truely amazing how the human body can repair itself with enough positive thinking and prayers. I've been praying for You and your Mom and family every since I saw the first post. They have some of the best head injury clinic's down in the Carolina's thanks in part to "CrashCar".

Spudz, I just got back from a short vacation and one of the first things I see on the HAMB is about your mom. First let me say how sorry I am for what she and your whole family are going through. It's going to be a rough time ahead.
Not to steal any of your situation but I feel I should share something. On July 13, 1988 an industrial garage door collapsed on me. It was 16' high, 14' wide and weighed about 1600 lbs. I was hospitalized for 3 1/2 years 1 1/2 yrs. in a rehab hospital, 7 head and brain sugeries. The doctors said after they knew I would live that if everything was sucessful I would be able to dress myself, eat 3 meals a day and spend the rest of my time watching television. They said I woul;d never drive a car again.
Long story , short version. They taught me how to walk, how to get dressed, how to feed myself, how to write, and use the phone. It took another 2 yrs of intense effort but I now have my drivers license back and am enjoying cars once again.
I guess I'm telling you this to let you know that nothing is impossible with a lot of prayer and hard work. I'll be praying for you and your mom and family. My best thoughts go out to you.

Spudz, what can I say that has not already been stated? You are right that life can change in an instant. The doctors can only advise what they know, and most have only limited understanding of how the brain works and the body's ability to overcome such tragic injuries. You and your sisters are going to help keep your Mom encouraged, and she is already showing massive improvement. Keep up the good work.
As a side note, most of my close HAMB friends know this (and now all of HAMB land), but my father had a massive brain stem stroke about 2 years ago and is totally paralyzed from the neck down. I know how life can change in an instant. You do not realize how precious something can be until it is taken away. The road to recovery is a bumpy uphill one at best. I assume your mother is not too old and her younger age will help her dramatically in recovery.

Spudz, I'm new to the HAMB, but I'm sure you'll take my prayers and best wishes for you and your mom along with everyone elses. You're a very strong 18yr old, it sounds like it runs in the family. Best wishes to you and yours.

Spudz if you're still here...howz about takin' a few seconds and lettin' us know how mom is doing. I've been going to school to become a R.N. and I've got to say I've seen some strange shit! People collapse from non-visible internal injuries and ones like your mom with, as the doctors put it,"no hope" pull through like a storm trooper on a mission. You are on the right track though. Time, patience and ALOT of prayers backing you dude ya can't go wrong! So far I've learned not to try to figure out what the body can, can't, will or won't do. School is tough but I relate things to the trusty ol' gasoline motor when I can...but when was the last time you saw flathead fix itself? Miracles dude that's what it is...pure fucking miracles. May you and your mom have a major fuckin' miracle dude!!! Sounds like she might be on one now. Hang on it's gonna be a tough ride. If you have half the tenacity that she does you'll make it just fine. I'm not a "religous" person so prayers would make me hippocrit so I'm just goin' to be straight up and tell you that there hasn't been a day since I read your post that I didn't send some good thoughts and wishes your way. Keep strong dude!

Hi,mate just like to say how sorry i am bout ya mom.I believe when it's your time to go ,you go.In this case it was'nt your moms time so she will be fine after all we are all put on this earth for a purpose and what that purpose is we will never know only GOD will know.A few years ago my mate henry had an accident on a motorcycle track day and the bike landed on his head crushing one side of his brain unfortatly it was this side of his brain that does all the motorfunctions for the body and the doctors wanted to turn the machine off.His mum was a nurse and she wouldnt let the doctors turn that damn thing off 4 months later he awoke 2 weeks after that he was speaking and moving and now he is walking and driving a car.The human body seems to have a very strong capacity for survival if you want to live,Henry now uses the other side of his brain because the side he damaged is dead. Now the moral of this is never believe what the doctors say and never ever give up hope if people are thinking of you and sending good thoughts and you are positive you'll do alright because we all have the power to heal ourselves and others we just don't know it.All my best wishes and thoughts and prayers go with you and you mum and your family infact i'll give you an hour right now as i'm off to church and i'll ask the reverend to pray for you and your family God bless you ..................Mad Marq

Well people always ask me how my mom is doing. I figured I'd just leave an update here.
Its been over 2 years now. She is the most important woman in the world to me....
Anyways, she had almost a complete recovery. Her eyesite is a little messed up but not completly
gone. She doesn't drive a car but has a golf cart she drives across town.
She has since gotten back together with my dad and they have bought a house together IN eloree
SC. They are doin great. My mom is her same old self, she has gained a little weight but
who cares lol. But I wanted to post this for another reason too.. I REALLY think how good my
mom did was because of all the people here and around the world that prayed for my mom.
I honestly believe that.. After I came back here and read all the positive posts, I knew
right then an there it would all be ok. I just wanted to end this all by thanking each and
everyone here.. I mean that.. I am forever in debt... Cole

Like Koppak I missed the first go-around with this thread. The human spirit is tough animal. Way to go MOM!! A friend was given a similar choice about his wife as Cole faced. His wife had an aneurism and was given no hope of recovery, no brain activity. He wanted the day to think about it and decided to have her checked one more time. Great to hear you're doing so well Mom! Everyone here on the hAMB was pulling for you and Cole and it looks like it worked. The Big Guy upstairs must have figured you needed to have some more fun down here - so you go out and enjoy yourself.
How 'bout a metalflake roof and some flames for that golf cart? Need a HAMB decal for the windshield;)

My thoughts and prayers are with your Mom and family.

This HAMB brotherhood is very strong. Sorry to hear of your Mom's fatality. These things REALLY put a damper on the Holidays. My parent's neighbor, of 50+ years recently died on Christmas eve. He will be missed, he was a top notch, Ole' Skool Cleveland machinist. Anal before anyone ever used the word.
Will keep her in our prayers.

I can't think of a better way to start the new year than to read this thread from beginning to end. I'm not sure how I missed it the first time, but what an incredible and inspiring story. :D

like many others i missed this one along the line and after reading it, it brought tears to my eyes when i read about the wreck. i sat there & hoped that everything would get better for u & ur family and as i can tell it has.
Spudz's Mom i'm glad things are getting better for u & Spudz's was rite in saying u were one hellva fighter.
this post & many others like it just goes to prove that we all aren't as ragged & ruff around the edges as some would believe. if a newbie was reading through this forum he or she would mostly think that we're all a bunch of greasey, sleazy, ruff around the edges, wrench turning, jalopy driving hoodlums that didnt care about nobody but ourselves & the cars/trucks we work on & drove. UNTILL they got to this one, then they would find out what kind of folks we all really are. this post & others like it just goes to show everyone && ourselves that we all do have a soft side to us  (i wont tell anyone though) and that we really do care about others.....joe
