An older dude a few miles down the road from me pert near Gave me the dune buggy he built in the 50's and raced around on the desert east of San Diego in the late 50's and early 60's. 'Guess he didn't want to see it slip into oblivion. I don't have a picture yet, but it's a quality job with Ford chassis components,56 Buick nailhead and 39 Ford three-speed tranny and banjo. Originally the engine was a flatty, but he wanted more grunt, so went to a 303 Olds OHV, and then in about 1960, he put the 322 nailhead in. Never blew the '39 Ford tranny or Banjo, but prolly cause he was usually on sand out there in the deseret and dunes. Wish I would have got the buggy before the Hilborn set-up was ripped off. The Old guy said he put the Hilborns on in the early 60's cause the carbs would crap out when going up, down and sideways on steep dunes. Talk about nostalgia, this rig has the old SW guages, Ford beam axle, steering, etc. Can't decide whether to restore the buggy, or make a nostalgia rod out of it. Any real collector value to vintage dune buggys?

My dad bought a cheap pinto powered t-bucket with 275/70/15 BFGs on the back and that damn thing will go places that trucks have to use four wheel drive. ....there is a soft spot at the back of his property that I have buried a Toyota, the T just idled across. It impressed the hell out of me.
The grandkids use it like a go-kart.

watch mystery science theater 3000 for an episode where they rip on an old movie called Eegah! about a caveman. dude in it has a "dune buggy," and if memory serves, it was more traditional hot rod than dune bugg. the kid DID have water in his tires for traction, still couldn't go ANYWHERE int hat movie! hilarious.

The movie EGAAH! is out on DVD. I got a set of drive-in movie monster movies for christmas and EGAAH! was in the set. The movie is very funny. Lots of action shots of the dune buggy. Does anyone know what the cowl on the car is from?

Billetproof dude,
My Giant Gila Monster disc does not work. I am very frustrated because I think that is one with some neat cars in it. Does your's work?
I would like to have a working copy. If I sent you a blank
VHS tape, could you tape it for me?
Thanks,
David

Cool pics. We used to make dune rods out of anything that we could get cheap when I was in Highschool. The hit the Dunes at Tillamook.

Even Michiganders get hot chicks by the bushel if they have the special 8 wheeler handy.

I just say the MST3K send up of the movie yesterday on Netflix. Pretty bad. A few cool cars in it.
The Dune buggy looked to have a cowl from a 40 Ford or Merc.
