I am trying to decide between a few engines for my '24 TT. I have a couple choices, all GM stuff. The thing is I want to use a later 700R4 for better freeway cruising. Who makes adapters to put 700R4s with the older engines. I know one of the magazines did a story in the past cople months but I can't remember which one. Anyone have any ideas. Thanks

Go here:

I hear they are nice and complete, but not cheap
Best to give us a list of your motor choices, that'll help figure who has the best adapter (if you need one) for the best price.

There is a buick and olds 455, a caddy motor(500 cu. in.?), a coupl pontiac engines and probibly any chevy angine that has been made.
I would suggest getting a 200R4, they can be built just as strong as a 700R4 and already have the BOP (Buick, Pontiac, Olds) bellhousing bolt pattern as well as the Chevy. They're dual bolt pattern. It's a pretty good tranny. 4spd w/ overdrive. Same size as a TH350. I had one in my Henry J and an old Station Wagon at one point. TCI and a couple other places make plenty of kits and parts. If anyone badmouths them I can point them to more than a couple 9 second Grand Nationals that are running them. So they're fine. The thing to look at is that wether you run a 700R4 or 200R4 with one of those big motors, neither one will stand up to the torque if abused in their stock config...

My problem is that I have a lead foot on the highway. my average speed is 80 mph. So I want the overdrive for that. I know of a 305/700R4 that I can get for $100 if it is still there. I figure I can turn around and get $100 back out of the engine, so It would be a free tranny. Are the bellhousingd interchangable between the 700 and 200?

Also what was the last year for the Buick 455 in a production car and what woulf the tranny options be if it is an auto?
The bellhousings are not interchangeable. They're part of the case. You should be able to pick up a 200R4 relatively cheap. i.e. less than $100. early 80's full size station wagons are a good place to look. I got my last one out of a '84 Buick Wagon. Even had a good motor in it. Got the whole car for $75. As for the last year of the Buick 455 I believe was 75 or 76. They are lower compression motors. The earlier 70's ones seem to be more desireable. Lot's of parts available to.
Oh yeah. Most likely trannys were either TH350 or TH400

Yaeh so, the 200r4 is cool cause you can run full throatal in fourth stock unlike a 700r4 but they are weak good for mild sbc tho. Cant use anything newer than 92 but the 92 pontiac is the best 700r4 and goes against a sbc. the 500 ci cad motor is a good one lots of parts from cad company, like 7000rpm cams and 550 stroker kits useing 454 cranks. you cant run a 700 tho they will burn up unless lots of money. 4L80e are junk they burn up a lot, dont know why just a lot are sold out of the wreaking yards.but a car ap may be cool and you need a thousand dollor computer to run it. I did it in my skoool bus and am pissed about it.4L60e aparently work better. dodge makes a 5 speed manual with granny low and overdrive but adapters are bank. im useing a '04 chevy tran 5 spd its all aluminum and has a built in bellhousing and slave cyl on imput shaft. but i got it cheep. matching engine output to tranny ratios to rearend and tire size is important if it matches youll go a lot faster

if you're gonna run a big motor, just use a (relatively cheap) 3 speed auto that came with the motor originally, and put a 2.75ish gear out back, with tall tires....you'll cruise at 80 just fine, and since it's a light car it will still have plenty of get up and go. Put a switch pitch converter TH400 in it for extra fun.

most rwd 92 pontiacs are chevies. the 2.8 and 3.8 engines have bop patterns.
