Here is a usefull link on rear end widths. However it doesn't list the Fairmount.

So-o-o, is the Fairmont rear end an 8 inch or a 9 inch or something else?? Reason I ask is a guy offered me one for $20 not too long ago.

is this a rear that would work in a shoebox swap? Not a maverick rear to be found around here, I've been trying to figure something else out for awhile.

The fairmont rearend is most likely a 7.5" rear. NOT a performance rearend in the least. Some early FOX chassis mustangs also used this rearend. The later 5.0L mustangs and some other fox chassis use the 8.8" rear. The 8.8" is a good rearend but under alot of power the clutch packs will fail quickly. Almost all FOX chassis rearends will interchange, so much so that even a 1999-2003 cobra independant rear will bolt into a 1978 fox chassis with minor work.
