View Full Version : OT - TLC comes after the HAMB
We've been approached by TLC and asked if we would like to be apart of their new "Rides" show next season. Here is my response:
"I appreciate the offer and think the show is going great places, but to be honest with you I don't think the HAMB or my personal daily activities would be good content for a family oriented network. We don't build theme cars and we don't participate in highly commercial events or promotions. Put shortly and please excuse me for my language, but we are fucking hoodlums - not clean room marketers. I've enclosed the last available copy of our 2004 calendar in hopes that you see this note as an honored declination and not an aggressive retort."
I'm not sure how they found out about us or if the offer was even real, but I thought I would inform the masses as you guys are the folks that earned the offer. I hope my reply was satisfactory... I would really actually love to do it if I had FINAL edit decisions (Yeah, right!), but after all the shit I've talked about JJ, I didn't think it was possible...

That is some funny shit. I for one would have liked to see how they were gonna make this group family friendly. That would have been worth the price of admission. Hell you should have sent Germ as the official represenative. At least it would have been funny.

I believe Ryan's response, while being blunt and to the point, was very tactful and appreciative. That's a tough combination. I am impressed.

I think it's too late for not wanting any non-trad and goldchainers to join the HAMB, Well the population here has almost doubles in a year, probably from the R&C article and other HAMBERS mentioning the site.
On another note, I think we have enough going on between all of us to do a HAMB Televsion Channel, not just a cameo on some episode

Be pretty hard doing a garage scene tho. You'd have to cover up the trash can full of empties and a lot of the posters and wall art. Just wouldn't look right.
And of course, you couldn't actually let the HAMBer speak. You'd have to BLEEP the BLEEPing BLEEPer every time he BLEEPing opened his BLEEPing mouth. It would come off like OCC and that wouldn't be right.
Hell, tell 'em to show up at the "Bend in the road" & we'll talk. Have 'em bring a couple cases of beer and something magnesium we can signal the space station with. We'll sing Cum-By-Ya with 'em. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think it's interesting that this thread serves a dual purpose.
1. Ryan was able to tell us that he turned down TLC
2. TLC will be looking at this board anyway to see who they can get, but will see this posting and that we are not interested in becoming another Von OCC Choppers trucker hat logo for 15 year olds to wear to the mall.

ok...maybe we have it all wrong....maybe TLC wanted to do a show about a group of people from all over the world who night after night sit infront of a glowing screen after putting in hard days at the office, shop, garage, and working on their cars, only to sit for hours offering help, opinions, guidance, jokes, and e-bay finds.
maybe they wanted an episode about the passion that the hamb embodies, not just cars and swearing.

I would've loved to have seen you and Jason Priestly enjoying a little glass of wine before taking him out for a spin in your coupe. Then it would've been nice to see him piss his pants. But from what I understand he's a racecar driver, so maybe it would take something a little scarier.
Perhaps a drunken date with one of germ's ladies.
Or maybe you could hook him up with Aaron Lasky for a special night out on the town, replete with clandestine assgrabbing of taken ladies and the subsequent removal of teeth with a 3/4" wrench.

Its nice when someone walks away from the spotlight, instead of trying so hard to jump into it. There's plenty of people trying to make a buck off this movement right now, and its getting pretty old. I've said it before, but I liked things better 3 or 4 years ago when swaps, shows, and websites like this weren't so popular. Cable TV and mainstream car shows didn't care about us.
Of course, most cool things get noticed, the word spreads, and it becomes more popular. The crowd thickens....
Shouting it from the roof tops only adds to the mayhem.
Nice job, Ryan.

Circle the wagons Hoodlums, TLC had considered our brand of fun marketable, they won't be the last.
I wish I was as noble as you guys make me seem... I considered a lot of factors including the health of the board, but honestly the deciding factor was the expense of the traffic we would see. If I was planning on selling the HAMB to the highest bidder, that wouldn't have been a problem...
As for Jason Priestly, he's a stand up guy and a pretty damn good driver. I've always said if he never did the whole acting gig, he would have had a lot more chances on the race track - he's pretty talented.

I believe if your in to traditional rods and customs at all you'll find the HAMB or hear about it through word of mouth. If you have a traditional car and you drive it at all, chances are someone from hear will eventually ask you, if your on the HAMB and tell you about it. It should stay that way.

I have to agree with the do not exploit a good thing thinking that many of you have. I also think Ryan's decision based on finance is great reason not too! Let TLC ride in on someone else and steamroll it to death and then leave it in lump when they are done with it. While under the influence of NyQuil it got me to thinking of a sort of top ten list...
1. I do not want to see some snot nosed kid wearing a HAMB shirt at the local mall.
2. I do not want to read 3,000 intros a day.
3. The thought of soccer moms in flat black mini-vans scares me.
4. If you paint the fenders flat black on a Honda Civic would it give the appearance of running fenderless?
5. HAMB stickers over the top of West Coast Shoppers stickers has me plotting new acts of vandalism (now that I'm an official hoodlum!!). We need to get them stickers of the HAMB shift knob in a massive 12" diameter to cover the window stickers on the imports in my 'hood.
6. The idea of a new Escalade in flat black with 23" dubs spray bombed red had me laughing. I wonder how you could turn the spinning things into something "traditional".
7. Oh my god!!! Now the PT Cruisers would become legitamate hot rods?
8. JC Whitney would be a major player in the aftermarket industry again!
9. This place has too much drama for even the guys at Orange County Crappers.
10. Cole would kick Billy Lane's ass in the first 10 minutes of the build off series between TLC and Discovery Channel...I, of course, included 7 minutes for commercial breaks. Boyd wouldn't contend because he is still in the corner bitchin' about how HIS guys can't do anything the way HE wants it done...kinda like a Billet Bob Villa.
and the top eleventh reason (NyQuil makes it hard to count to ten) why we shouldn't go on TLC...
11. Pro-street billet rods with sponge paint jobs, wild graphics, air conditioning and wheelie bars would become old school. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Ryan, I think you did the right thing..
though if they want to see real hot rods they could come out to the HAMB drags (maybe throw out some sponsorship money your way to help out with cost) and tell them they can not refernce the website or list the web address to out the masses (but make sure they do a proper intro or else Germ gets to provide some commentary).. Do it Real World style unedited, have a few cameras in some of the cars driving to the events (hot rod reality TV) Just show the hot rods parked and racing and what ever else happens. It would be better then the Osbornes...

the truth of it all is that the hamb was built to what it is by its participants and thats what attracted the likes of TLC not to take anything from Ryan for giving us this outlet and maintaining it he is a true giver but he is in no way the success of the hamb its the members that make it who chose to be here themselves if TLC is watching this site I am sure they will contact the people they want to with out Ryans endorsment I feel Ryan should take them up on there offer if they provide a free server and staff under Ryans direct authority that way Ryan gets credit for his hard work maintaining this site and it will become self supporting but to be sure and be in no way affiliated with TLC just doing bussiness with them no pop ups allowed

Or what about Radshit ripping them big ole stinky green chili farts on camera.I'm sure that would be the end of it real quick.

No matter how "on target" the program would portray us, the masses still wouldn't get it. Still wouldn't understand what drives us but that wouldn't stop 'em from trying to jump onto our band wagon...............
...........although our unwillingness to bask in fame will no doubt spark a strong curiousity. I can see TLC's wheels turning as they think:.......

Congrats on keeping things in a straight line Ryan. In my opinion the stuff on TV showing the bike builders, monster garage, etc. shows poor taste and sends a bad message to people just getting started. There are enough knuckle-dragging sociopath wanna-be's in this world without imortalizing more. If PBS or TLC wanted to do a series similar to "This Old House" showing the various techniques and skills invloved in rodding then I would say "full speed ahead". A real life show, highlighting the real-life skills involved in what we do would be an asset. We don't need to see people acting like assholes, throwing tools, throwing temper tantrums, etc. There are a lot of talented, creative people on HAMB (TLC and old man Teutle could take a lesson.(I feel sorry for Paul Jr.He seems like a class act.) Treat people with respect and you will get the same. Just my .02 cents. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To be honest, any members that contribute worthwhile information on a regular basis here (I do not include myself in that statement) should be damn proud of the fact that a TV show wanted to use this forum on a program to convey learning. I should most likely keep my mouth shut but here it goes anyway. I would really like to see a show that encludes people who are "real" building "real" rides. I would think it was the koolest if a member of the HAMB was the topic of such show. I don't think it needs to be advirtised as a HAMB project and I don't think that the HAMB should even be spoken of during the show. We would know and that would be enough.
