Hey kids. I am at a point where I need to make a decision on the paint for my Touring. You see, the local carclub wants me to enter the rolling chassis in our carshow in 6 weeks. I am close enough to get the thing done if I lay the body aside. So, I need to make a choice. The paint is a single stage bright blue. I like gloss but I also like a satin paint. My boss has flattened paint on his roadster, it is super easy to maintain. No waxing needed! So, what do you guys and gals think?

Yeah Rocky, I am going goldchain http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Gloss.

Too much fine work there to be camoflaged by "Rat Rod Primer/Satin".

Paint it! Satin is waaaay over done. Unless of corse the finish work is kinda crappy, and it's not really that straight, and you feel the need to hide shit! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do what you want to do. As far as everybody doing satin/primer, I pretty sure there are way more painted cars than primed.

Gloss.

Once it starts to go a little bit, wax will bring it back many times.

When satin goes, it's gone....

I like the idea of driving the car in glossy paint till it has been rubbed so much it wears thin. Whataya say 15 years?

Primer (not flattened paint) Perfect example, see pic. below. This is my car that just made its way out from the east coast. It was fresh out of the booth & beautiful before it left on the transporter.

If I were paying to have this fixed (which I'm not) I would need to sell an organ or two. On the other hand, if it was in primer I could scuff it, fill it, and reshoot it myself.

No more glossy paint jobs for me after this one.

And one more thing. Everyone is NOT primering their cars. A lot of people on this message board are, but how many is that in the big picture of rods nation wide? Not too many.

As far as flattened paint, I'm w/ C9. You might as well just go w/ gloss.

If I go the Satin route, it will be with flattening agent in real paint. I have no desire to run actual primer long term. Right now my gut is telling me glossy though.

If you still have finish-bodywork to do or you plan on running it in semi-gloss on a permanent basis, go with primer.
Let the primer and filler shrink until you're ready for the gloss paint. If you paint it now, before you're ready for final assembly, the paint is gonna get damaged, just sure as shit. Just my humble opinion as a cheap bastid who would just die if he hadda paint a car twice before it ever hit the road....

Rock, this isnnt a practice run. The car will go together and be driven this summer. If I run out of time, the body will stay primer but the frame will be done in final finish.

I like the flat look. My buddy painted his chopped '30 five window last spring and now no one even notices his rig when we are out for a run. When he was running primer people would not leave him alone. Go figure!

Just in case you need one more opinion - gloss.

On Clarence I had primer for several years and then base coat without clearcoat for several years. It wasn't as easy to take care of as folks would lead you to believe.

Dirt and stains wash off of smooth paint. Sometimes it's really hard to get it off of (out of) something with more texture.

'Course Clarence gets driven anytime anywhere in any weather. If you're only gonna drive on paved roads in dry weather it won't matter as much.

That's a good point about the texture. Dirt and dust and anything you can imagine stick to mine. You wash it and it's dirty again the next day. I'd say gloss.

You guys have never been around SS Urethane that has been flattened have you? Stuff sheds dirt like teflon. Easy to clean, doesnt stain. That said, I will prob end up doing glossy, I was always leaning that way. What really surprised me was how everyone here is saying gloss? I would have expected the total opposite!
