Here is one with a twist.... this one came about from a conversation I had with a fellow HAMB member a while ago.....he drew the picture for me.
When I was growing up, my dad owned a 1969 Datsun 1600 pick up. I loved that truck..I've owned two in my life..I wish I still had one of them. If I come across another one....this is what I'm going to build....
This just turns my crank!
purple
01-02-2004, 06:42 AM
He had that already done, he did it when I got my Datsun truck and said I want to gasser it (sorry, don't mean to step on your toes). I could have just gotten you one of those for $200 just recently. Great trucks. Ito is king. Hear is his version of my truck.

01-02-2004, 07:04 AM
Sorry...been a long time.........That one is bitching..I like the transverse leaf spring idea because of the short distance of the front sheet metal on those trucks.
The 69-72 are my favorites.....and I have a Hemi waiting for one now.......maybe a seat in the middle ..or possibly a fliptop .....
purple
01-02-2004, 07:10 AM
That would be too cool. I want to do the transverse leaf, but I may go with short parallel instead. I have a van axle already.

Sorry to highjack this post........
But this is way cool...my son is into drifting and the small cars.....I'm painting his Mazda RX7 now...it's lightened and made to haul ass.
What better way to close the gap between my background ( straight axled cars of the 60's and 70's ) and his current Japanese car interest.....then a Hemi powered gasser Datsun pick-up......

Rich,
I found a local Ai full glass-body Anglia. It is blue with flames. It is sitting on an AMC frame, with an AMC 6, and the guy drives it around. It is very crude, but it has a good look from 50 ft. For example, he sprayed the steel wheels silver to give them an aluminum look. I will try and get a few shots.

Here are a few of my old 65 Comet that I sold to friends of mine and they painted it and my dad added the straight axle for them. It has gone as fast as 12.66 at 109 with a 289 engine, not to bad, and hey its a four door. The cool thing with this car is when the young man got it from me this is what he wanted to do. Most kids at the age of 18 would have built an import or went with a later model Mustang or Camero so he went old school and was right there helping with all the work.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's Randy Dobbs out of Long Beach. He came into my shop a few years ago talking about it. I went to his house, and there it was, from the covers of some of my early 70's Popular Hot Rodding magazines. He's owned it all these years. It was in TRJ a few yrs back, right after Chuck(?) Lombardo finished the restoration at his California Street Rods here in SoCal. It wears it's original headliner for flavor. GREAT restorationOne of my favourite pics. Anybody know this car ???

I built this one 12 years ago, 66 Falcon wagon i got for nothing, Had a 6/71 blown 427 in it, Went really well. Not as high as some but we have a lot of bends here in the U.K.
Ended up remaking every panel except the roof and rear quarters in GRP, It was pretty lightweight 8-)

Nice launch, hang those wheels man! My buddy and I were talking that there should be second beam a foot above the track two feet after the starting beam so if you can't/don't lift em you lose. It'd make for a better show than the bracket racing that usually goes down at the Gas meets...

I know, you see so many Willys' these days, with all the glass ones, and steel-aluminum recreations but I'd still like to build a pick-up. Nothing fancy just raw and tough looking.

this is my wagon i'm working on. Its a 59 dodge royal lancer that i put the front axle from a dodge d100 pick up under. It has a 440 ci motor w/727 tranny. Its been called street freak and gasser but its both. It sits too high for a gasser but too low for a freak. ijust finished turning it into a 2door by stretching front doors 6 in and shortening back doors the same and welding them solid. i hope tohave it running for summer fun.

COOL! The yellow Austin in the top, middle pic is my old car. It used to be The Impossible Dream from the 70's. Kinda famous back then when Danny Broguirre owned it. There's a really good pic of it on the back bumper at the old Irwindale strip in TRJ a few yrs agoMore pictures from Buffalo

The Yellow Austin is one awesome little car!!! I talked with the young guy who is now driving the car. He said they were running good but trying to dial in the rear suspension, trying to get it handling a little better. My Favorite car to watch all weekend. I liked the car better when you had it painted blue. There was a article in Gasser Wars Magazine a while back of the car in both paint schemes. If I owned the car now I would paint it blue with hand lettered name and contingency sponsors like you had it.:)

I live at this event every year, it has to best on the east coast for these cars.

He was attending wyotech university. The henry J was his project while there. I hope he can finish it someday. I think he got a nice start. We found a early 460 ford, 4 speed tranny and a 9" rear.

Hey IBB1, It's a small world. I am good friends with Ross. My Dad bought the Ford 351w engine that was in the car when Doug Cadmen owned the Willy's. We went to Ross's house and picked it up. He's a real nice guy and did a nice job on the 33. I made the lettering that's on his doors.(Willy Kool) He had a great time at the Home Run with the car. Can't wait to see his new one. I am hoping to have my Fiat out there this year as a roller and hopefully next year as a runner.

this is my wagon i'm working on.
Dude, I love the frontend of your car. Nobody really likes the front end on my Studebaker but I just like the odd-balls. Your's is truly different. The meaner looking the better in my book.

your car could be or IS a gasser, if its got a modified engine it could run gas class.
an axel is not required to make a car a gasser, many cars are slamed on the ground and many also used the stock frotends and just raised them with springs or spring spacers.
lots of cars went to an axel to get some weight off the front and raised them up to get better traction to the rear(tires sucked in the early 60's).
gasser can mean different things to different people, early 60's gasser had one look and as the 60's went into the 70's things changed in the gas classes and they had a different look but they were still gassers.:D
but they all had fenders..... Ron.

EXACTLY!!! The cars in the earlier "gas" classes were basically a "driver" with no hubcaps. Very plain, limited speed equipment (or dressup items like mag wheels), and was just a way for the average guy to race his driver car on the weekends. And, like everything else, it exploded to what is more popularly known as Gassers. The mid 60's badasses are what's remembered.your car could be or IS a gasser, if its got a modified engine it could run gas class.

Moparron & Groucho are right on about the Axle deal. Many people these days think a gasser must have a straight axle and also if it has a straight axle it's a gasser. Both are very incorrect. Many gassers raced both in the early days of the class with stock independent front ends. Also many lower class gassers in the late 60's kept the stock front ends. Here's a photo of 2 Gassers that race with us that were both built in the 60's and do not have straight axles. This is the final round of our last race of the season. The Ford got into the 9's for the first time on this pass and the Chevy was running 10.1's.

It's a 63 Scout 80. That was the way it looked when it was named the Elephant Hunter in the 73 Hot Rod yearbook. It had an Olds rear with 5:13s on simple leaf springs. The front is an econoline drop axle with Ford brakes and spindles. The hemi was set back 12 inches into the firewall. That leaves very little legroom. Good thing I'm short. It was pretty crude with a plywood bed. The original owner ran it at the old Keystone Dragstrip without the top, no windshield and no hood. It ran mid 12's with funny car style burnouts. The stories of it's exploits on the street around here are legendary.
When I got it, it was missing the drivetrain and the wheels. I've swapped out some of the heritage in favor of safety and drivability. As much as I loved the stance it had to change a bit. The Olds rear is out and a narrowed Dana 60 with a spool and 4:56 gears is in. All mounted on a Competition Engineering ladder bar setup. The front end is in great shape and will be run as is. I've managed to find a set of 15x4.5 Ansens for the front and 15x10 Americans with MT 31x13's. I'm mini tubbing the bed to fit the slicks under the fenderwells. The concussion bar and hoop is out and an 8 point cage is in. The 377 smallblock is a fairly mild setup (510 hp 467 tq) to get it sorted out.
2011 Update:
I've added the pictures from the truck's first outing at the track. It went a best of 11.31 on a pretty easy pass and on it's last pass pulled a big wheelstand.
The last set of pictures is from the 2011 World of Wheels here in Winnipeg where the truck won it's class and got a special interest award because of it's heritage and history.

saxxon, that scout is so cool. i always liked the way you could build the jeeps and scout other than 4wd.
i also liked the truck top and not the long roof on them too.
when i was 15 a friend of mine new a guy that built a scout with a 480 inch olds and hydro in it.
he took it to lions and it ran 12.56 with all four tires smoking.
around '67 my friend bought it and we would go street racing with it. beat a lot of people.
i got to thinking about it the other day and just for the fun of it, i looked on craigslist.
what do you know? i found a '63 in real good shape. 4wd works, no rust, ran good, good tires and only $1500 dollars.
man, i can just see this with a straight axle and big tires. a blower coming out of the hood.
i tried to trade him a t bucket project i have, but he only wants money.
i'm still trying to figure out how to get up the money.
come on stimulus check!!

I don't see any billet wheels in this photo. Early Cragar Super Tricks that are on the front of the Ford ARE period correct as they were out in the very early 70's. We will allow a car to run a more modern wheel on the back as long as the rest of the car fits. Ford Freak, why is this a problem for you?

Not a problem for me - the wheels just didn't seem to fit the "period correct" theme of a nostalgia gasser, (to me), and I wondered why these wheels were allowed in the ECG racing series. Apparently, I misread & misinterperated the wheel rule. Thanks for the explanation.

Lee,
Gene had 2 race engines for the Plymouth. One was a 380" SBC and the other was a 404" SBC. He kept them both and used improved versions of them in the first Anglia. I'm not sure if it had a powerplant when he sold it or not.
Sure would like to know where that car ended up!

WHOOOOOOOOOOOO! EXCUSE ME MR. GASSER!
What's wrong with people honoring the old days of drag racing by building a tribute car? No I wasn't there. But what if the guy that I bought it from raced it then? At Lions, and San Fernando? What if he never won anything? What if he just did it for the fun? What if he broke in it the '70's? What if he put it in his garage to fix later? What if he got married, had kids, life got in the way? And what if 30 or so years later I happened to find it, buy it, drag it out, fix it and drive it? Would it be a Gasser then?
Then what's the difference? Same old cars? Built the same old way?

What if he never won anything? What if he just did it for the fun? What if he broke in it the '70's? What if he put it in his garage to fix later? What if he got married, had kids, life got in the way? And what if 30 or so years later I happened to find it, buy it, drag it out, fix it and drive it? Would it be a Gasser then?
Then what's the difference? Same old cars? Built the same old way?
Guess you did not read the post awile back. I said if it was a gasser back then ,then it is a gasser. But if it was built today it is a clone.

I read it but your being too closed minded. After I get mine back together, because ( I ) blew it up this time, it's going back to the track. I may not win either but I'm gonna have fun doing it. In my GASSER ! And anybody who builds one is a Gasser too.

Obviously a original gasser or any drag car from the 60's has to be recognized for where it has been and seen, battling it out on dragstips of a lost era for years at long closed strips. BUT, a newly built gasser done correctly has my respect as a cool car and "gasser". Sure it wasn't there but hey no one's inventing a time machine any time soon. Someone has to continue history. I dont like using the terms clone, replica or tribute myself. It's like the "hot rod" "rat rod" title debate, it all depends on the individual car and how well it was done rather than labeling an entire group. We still build a '32 and call it a hot rod...

sorry bracket racing will never ne drag racing. We fought that (brackets) when they first started that in the 70s. It is the reason most guys quit.
I am building a 40 PU to run D/GAS 10.60 class and if I cant run the #
I WILL run the hot rod class which is a dial your own time, Yes bracket racing, I don't care, I WILL HAVE FUN!!!!!!!
thats what I can afford.:cool::D
and I think most guys quit because gas classes were eliminated and rolled into comp eliminator and only the big buck, high sponcered guys could compete.
bracket racing saved a lot of of the track for awhile, to bad so many are gone now Ron....

True, is a Brookeville '32 Roadster not a '32 Roadster? It's more '32 Roadster then I'll ever have.
