Good stuff again this week. It's nice to see different people doing different things, keeps the rest of us on our toes.
I have the final pictures of last weeks unfinished Desk Top Art Work. This one is my version of Roger's 40 Stude. The stude is Desk Top Art Work #50.
Also have a finished version of a late 60s-early 70s dirt track modified and another dirt track modified not quite done. Both dirt track cars have a removable body so the detailed frame is visable. The unfinished one still needs the headers and I still have to build the body. These two Art Works were ordered by the same guy. They are # 51 and # 52 Gene

Here's the unprimed prototype for a custom bass head we just wrapped up for King Doublebass in SoCal...
We did most of it in red polyclay so we could get an idea of how it might look after they painted it, which might be an entire red metalflake job over the whole instrument.
We are also very proud to be involved in creating works of art that will be painted and pinstriped by a master,Dave Whittle, who we hope to meet someday.....
At this stage, there was still a lot of sanding and markings visible on the prototype.

Here's an oldie but goodie...
This is an example of some of our earlier work... The originals were often done and printed the cheapest way possible (black & white Xerox)... It's always exciting for me to see this old stuff dusted off and polished when Kali adds digital color and touches up all of the rips and tears that are on the surviving images.
It's cool to relive this artwork again, but I feel old when it comes time to add the copyright date... notice this poster is 20 YEARS OLD!!
We hope you enjoy this...

I warn you this may turn into a bit of a rant, but what the heck. I don't say much if anything these days here on the HAMB.Don't say much to anyone at all really these days. I just wonder if people listen or infact even understand. I just know I am going through a stage in life where my creativity and excitement for the creativity, ebbs and flows. But I also think I am also creating some special stuff (well in my mind I think it is, I create this stuff for me and no one else really, but I know sub-consciously one needs to show others one's stuff). My striping is an essential part of my creativity ( it is not just with paint and a striping brush that I create stuff). My striping gives freedom of expressing stuff and the ability to try different things in a very convenient way. I look at other's striping and know that my technical style is very raw in many instances, but that in fact is a big part of my style in general. I had better stop this part of the 'rant' !
For me the Friday art thing lost it's excitment for a while, I don't know why. I still came and looked every week, but it just wasn't doing anything for me. Not like it had done so previously, when I couldn't wait until Friday to see what was going to be here. I may not be back to that stage of hangin out until Friday, but at least I want to be a part of it again. This last month or so I think the art show has been the best for a long time. I am so pleased to see the diverse range of stuff ad to see the progress of the stripers. You're all great.
Ok I had better stop this time. Here's and old one just so this isn't a bunch of wasted words. Take it easy Geoff aka whodakyhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v167/whodaky/A204.jpg

First off, who is Gerald Windgrove? Should I know him cause he was famous or something?
A lot of these little cars I build are built from pictures. They are my renditions of someone's car, sometimes pretty close, sometimes not so close.:D The Stude was one built from a couple pictures of Roger's car, which has many custom things done to it. I didn't realize how many custom touches Roger's car had until I saw pictures of a stock 40 Stude last night! The pictures are Rogers Stude, in case you haven't seen it.
The more of these I build, I think I'm getting closer to the real thing, but I'm having fun anyway.:D Gene

my lettering still sucks and im not happy with how thick the scallop outlines came out, but i did an "oopsie" and there was no way to fix it as the red was still wet so i had to improvise.... any recommendations on the lettering? i think the white made it look crappy. should have probably used red or just left it alone. i think the second word came out a little better.

Caffeine, the white on the lettering works for me. Gives it that real early feel as does the style of the lettering. I love the striping design. So straight forward, something I tend not to do enough of. Because I am always experimenting with creating new styles. Can never have enough strings in one's bow. Perhaps the only thing I don't like on that piece is the flames/scallops. I think scallops would have worked better on both sides. Having said that you have to try these things. sometimes they work and somethimes they don't. When they work it is worth more than any of the stuff that doesn't and you have just created another thing that you can use in the future. I like to take chances with my striping, try new stuff; get out of the comfort zone. I know many people may not like a lot of the unusal things I do, because it isn't in what I would call the ''50s hot rod style'. But I don't want to do everything in that style, I want to create; I want to cross the line. I want my stuff to be known for it's individuality.
Caffeine I don't letter so I can't offer any real advice in that respect. But it is good that you are critical of your work. That in itself will make you better and maintain and create a better standard in your work as well as wanting others to achieve better in what they do.
Whoops, that's a lot of reading, maybe I am getting back to what I used to do; write a lot.
PS Caffiene I am always impressed by your striping! Geoff aka whodaky
PPS here's an oldie, but what I think is one of my best pieces; has been here seen here before; but it relates to what I was saying. This definitely isn't a piece done in the ' '50s hot rod style'http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v167/whodaky/FA5.jpg

yeah reason i did the flames, scallops was from the above discussion with barnett, harpoon, etc.
I like the unbalance of it,
i thought hot rod harmony was kinda ironic as they are two complete designs assymentrical with the symentrical design in the center.
i was just goofing around as i needed "something" to just practice some lettering :)
just another goof around. i have a pile of goof around stuff, i should take some pics and post one day when i move and get settled in, before i put it in a box never to be seen againhaha.

If i can offer my 2 cents on the lettering.....The white on the letters might have been better off done in red...It would've givin' more "harmony" to the rest of your design....as it is, when you look at it from a distance of more than 4 feet, it looks like holes in the letters...Also, a light gray drop shadow down and to the left off the lettering would really give it "pop"
Design wise.....I once read a quote by Russ Mowry, a fantastic artist from Jersey....Establish your guidelines for your designs....then break them.....That always stuck with me

Yeah put that old stuff away, but don't throw it out. And don't let it be never to be seen again stuff. Go back and look at it from time to time. It will show you how you have progressed and even some of one's early ideas, that didn't work then can maybe work now;because you have progressed and became a better technician.
Over the years I have given so many of my pieces away, they are all around the country here, even a few in the US. It is kind of neat going some place to someone's place that ended up with one of one's pieces and seeing that piece after a period of time. Especially the stuff one may have forgotten.
Symmetry works in many ways. The piece I just showed has what I would call a layered asymmetry. ie it has a symmetrical design on top and an asymmetrical design below. But as a whole it comes across to me as a totally asymmetrical piece.
Well that's the technical way I see that particular piece. geoff akawhodaky

I know its not friday anymore but this was the first time I was able to scan some pics onto the computer this week. Here is a couple of my feeble attempts at drawing.

Your feeble attempts look better than some of my honest attempts:D
I haven't felt the art bug in awhile- I've just been priming my canvas and doing the backgrounds and such. I need to get the bookstore or even a gallery (still haven't been to the Austin Museum of Art and there's a few smaller galleries I should check out.) 9-5's killin' my creativity...:(

I know what you mean I work 2-11pm thurday- monday. working that late and having to commute really puts a damper in my creativity also.

My job sucked my creative mind and soul out the one day 6 and a half years ago when I was filling out the W4.
Caffeine, as far as the critique of the lettering goes, you should know I rightclicksaved your closeup view of the lettering because I wanted to file it away in my memory bank as I try to learn. Looks like a mighty nice example to follow if you ask me. I'm fixin' to try that highlight technique when I get a chance.
