View Full Version : You call this a paint job?

When Matt (HotRodDrummer) said his truck was being painted I thought oh, he's covering up the flat black with shiney red, or green or yellow maybe? But when I saw it today I was knocked out! Not at all what I expected.
See pics below.

Actually, this is pretty cool. I hope I'm not giving away any secrets here but the front fenders are glass. How do like the "rust" spots?
This was one of the coolest things I saw at Frankenmuth. Thanks Matt for bringing it.

Once I went to a friends house he had just bought, and he embarassedly showed me what the previous owner had done- apparently an interior decorator had swung a chain against the kitchen cabinets to "distress" them and painted them to look old. It was pathetic and kinda funny. The funniest part was that it still didn't look real because it was too even.
In no way does this this story have any parallels with this post. Any conclusions drawn from this story between the masculinity of the interior decorating profession and hotrodders are those of the reader.

I believe Josh could provide some insite into the exact details as I believe he did some of the work on Poteets and the one with the Injected motor in back
From what I understand you paint different color primers (remember where you painted it so take a pic) and then he used thinned way down One Shot and applied with a brush.. Then sanded thru on some of the high spots (curves and corners) to get the rub thru effect...

Josh and his dad did the truck for Poteet, and the hilborn 32 truck belongs to Josh's dad Dan Shaw. They do the best patina work around. But alot of people don't get the facts right before they get on the HAMB and there had been enough wrong info given about Josh and his dad. He is not too fond of the HAMB forum lately.
not to mention that at least one of the coats of paint must be brush applied house paint! also the horizontal surfaces should be extremely weathered "from the sun" while the vertical ones should not be.
what really baffles me though, is why? i can understand faux patina on a 32 roadster, you just don't stumble across them with "presentabe" patina everyday anymore, but F-1 trucks? they're about the farthest thing from being rare.
i would like to see faux patina put to good use and done properly, like a vintage racecar or hot rod, restored to one of its well worn, but updated slightly later versions.

To answer this question:
From what I can tell it looks like they put down a few coats of contrasting color paint and then sand or rub through it.
But in my opinion, they get it all wrong. Take the pic of the truck above for example. They are on the right path, cause that truck looks great......but.
If fooling the eye is what that paint job is suppose to do, then it falls short.
It falls short because it has a UNIFORM quality to it. NOTHING ages in a uniform manner. These people need to use different colors of paint. One fender needs to be painted about 50 times while the other is painted only 6 times. The hood needs to have a few chains scraped over it...then leave that out in the rain. Then spray primer over that and then sand...then put a box of old tools on the roof. Pile the bed with some old oil soaked rags, then throw on some dirt. Sweep that out, then paint it. then sand. then chain it. then...get out the chickens and have them roost on it.... tie the dog to the bumber for a week and park in the mud........you get the idea.
Patina comes from lots of dissimilar surface treatments. All which can be imitated in a few weeks or months if you know what you are doing. And if the idea is to fool the eye, then DO IT!
Just my opinion....
Sorry for the rant and hijacking the post.

Hey guys, I checked that truck out up in Frankenmuth, and it is AWESOME! Donzie took some great pics, but even those don't do it justice. Sure you might be able to tell it's not a real patina if you look at it long enough, but who cares? I can tell that yer flat black and red wheels is far from original at first glance, but I still dig it. Rusty 'glass fenders? Whens the last time you saw that? I don't care how much you guys wanna dog it, it's cool. REAL cool. Job well done guys!

trade secret?? please, what kind of moron do you gotta be to not be able to figure out what kind of application and weathering it takes to make a 50 year old truck look 50 years old? or real rust on fiberglass? good hobby shops have rust kits, i'm sure a person could google up a ton of info on faux rusting.
maybe i've live too many years in monnesota, maybe i've been around too many trucks that are used, abused, and worn out, to fully comprehend why someone would put all that work into faux finishing something that could be easily found with the real thing. whats next, trowelling mud into the fenderwells, using a tweezers and glue to carefully place bugs on the front?
its not the weathering, its tha fact that its a plain jane truck. in perspective, that birdshit glass roadster in R&C looks pretty good.

I'm curious as to why the phone number isn't JA5-6051, as in the 50's manner of reciting phone numbers. In this case, "call Jackson 5, 6051". Perhaps too confusing to potential customers who weren't around in those days.
Never the less, it's a very interesting, creative approach to finishing a truck.

Well, I like it, if it's done well and not over the top (like fake birdshit.) I saw a 32' a few years ago with new patina... looked so stupid. It was obviously a brand new glass body, new rims and tires, new tweed interior, and then brushed on paint sanded through here and there. It was a joke. Not sure about the fake rust, but I like the idea of the paint. Real useful when you lose the real patina fixing major dents and rust, or after a chop. I really like the logos, any closeups?

Donzie's "questions" were all tongue in cheek. Matt never asked for anyone opinions, he's not the type to even care what others think. He's not really the type that would even post photos of his own stuff. He's very low keyed.
The truck is certainly doing it's job! A controversial post like this is great advertsing. Now everyone who reads this and is following along knows that Matt and his dad have a hot rod shop in Ionia and the phone number has even been posted in this thread a time or two. Just in case anyone cares, the area code for Ionia, where Matt and his Dad own a hot rod shop, is 616. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I guess that some people won't be satisfied until you paint it semi-gloss black and put some crappy flames on it. But don't use DP90 -- oh wait it is okay to use DP90 this week. It reminds me of the guitars that Fender makes , they are called " relics " . They are fake aged and made to look all vintage and antique . I guess it is cool if that's what you wanted it to look like , you did a good job . That must have been ALOT of colour sanding . I think it is cooler of the paintjob ends up looking like that after many years on the road . Same as the ratbikes that are held together with bailing wire and string , after years of falling aprt on the road . I think " patina " should be found or earned . . . but again it isnt my truck , or my problem . As long as you drive the shiht out of it , then it does what a vehicle is suposed to do . Was wondering what you used on your running boards. Grandson is going to spray a bedliner (rhinoliner?) on his Jimmy. Was wondering if that would work on running boards... does that material trap moisture... become impossible to remove... that kind of thing. thanks. himmelberg

anyway, i DO have high expectations, and like to think i have pretty decent taste, and i grew up with farm trucks. when someone tells me, "hey check out that period 50's custom over there" i don't want to walk over and see digital gauges and airbag switches, that ain't period. same with a paint treatment. i don't dislike the concept itself, i have a few fake patina projects in the works myself, i was offering a little constructive criticism, if a little blunt. if one person says it don't look like real patina, then theres a hundred more that are thinking it but ain't gonna say it. from what the pics show, it looks about like any other vehicle being prepped for a paint job, and maybe given up on.
this assface says too fuckin bad if people can't handle opinions. at least i didn't call it an ugly piece of shit or whatever whoever said. anybody in the hot rod/custom thing should be able to cope with those whose opinions are not the same. some of us dig styles that NOBODY else seems to understand or comprehend, so rejection is part of the game. i'd be in a rubber room if i got pissy everytime some jackass told me what i "should" do to my shit.
the internet can be kinda like at a show, when you just stand back 20 feet from your own car, and listen to comments, do you rush over and start yelling and argueing at every person who makes a critical comment?
oh, and i don't even dislike the truck, i just could look "a little more real" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

There ain't no rules...
Soooo get off your keyboard and go build a truck.
I've found that time and money are the only real factors involved, since I'm just a taxpayer and a family man (with a life).
Do what you can with what you have, and drive the hell out of it when you're "done".
I think it's a nice truck. Enjoy it.

Germ: The best mechanics are usually the ones who's rides look and sound like they need a tune-up. Seems they're working on everyone else's shit and never get around to their own. That's the guy I want working on mine. Not the guy who's playing with his while mine sits. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I like the guy who built Walmart. Worth millions, and he drove around in an old pickup truck because he liked it. My kind of guy.
Then there's Orange County Choppers. So busy building and displaying their theme bikes they are always complaining about having to get around to customer bikes (After we finish this latest theme bike). I wouldn't let them check my oil, much less build me anything.
When I go to a shop, I want to talk to the old fart with the beat up pickup and greasy overalls. Not the college kid with the tie and pocket protector motoring up in his new Lexus.
A shop truck or a junkyard dog should look like what they are, not a show piece. Having said that, I prefer real patina to fake, but I kinda like the skill involved in doing a good fake. I have a buddy who has a rusty 1914 model T that looks like it's too far gone to save. But it runs like a top and drives great. He built a deck lid for the turtle deck from scratch, then tried rusting it every way he could think of to make it look like the rest of the car. Had more fun trying to rust that perfect lid than he did making it! And that's the point, having fun. He has another T same year and model that looks showroom fresh. He likes parking them side by side at shows like a before and after thing. Only the before one actually runs better than the after one! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
you ask for an OPINION and you get ONE??
FAKE PATINA is GAY
then KUSTOMBUILDER doesn't like the OPINION. so his vagina gets all wet,,
I imagine that in michigan he might have BUILT you your 350 powered cutlass wagon..
I think the FAKE patina, is GAY...

I wouldn't want to paint "fake" flames lest being called a gay bitch from Michigan (I was born at Cottage Hospital, Grosse Point, MI).

adding FAKE PATINA just seems weird..

One thing I can add- out in cali or anywhere in the desert, a car casn sit for 30 years and really ooze patina, paint bleached from the sun, light surface rust, etc, and yet be absolutly solid. In the east the same car would have no floors, no rockers, and holes big enough to stick your hand through all over. Now make it somewhere like michigan where a 3 year old car is severly rusted, and there is no such thing as a useable car with patina. So, I can see why Germ doesn't understand it, yet all the northerners dig it. Just my 2 cents

Man, that truck looks good...except I don't like that the imperfections were airbrushed.
I'm planning on doing something similar w/ a 54 GMC I just picked up. The only difference is I plan to take some wet/dry, a hose, and some elbow grease and go to town. No airbrushing here.
Never-the-less, this guy obviously put some hard work into this thing and kudos to him for trying something a little more unique than the average candy apple red kustom paint job.
=mike=
09-09-2003, 02:18 PM
I didnt read anywhere that anything was airbrushed , I think on the first page hot rod drummer says that it was sanded though , in the way you are talking about . thats really the only way you could make a paintjob like that look correct . I think the only things " painted " to look old were the logos .

09-09-2003, 02:32 PM
Mike, he said the front fenders were glas but they have "rust" on them... I'm guessing he brushed that in.
I liked that little glas roadster that was making the rounds a couple of years ago with all the fake Patina on it. It made me laugh. I thought it was cool cause I was seeing all these credit rodders parking there boyd rods and trying to find a car with patina to spend a fortune on. I saw it as a poke in the eye to them. But now I see way to many rust buckets on the road that have gone way past "Fagtina" TM and are just POS's. Painting a car to look like that, that you had already had "fixed" and put in primer does seem a little stupid to me.
But what's done is done. If he had asked if it would be cool before he did it, I would have jumped all over the idea. To each his own...

You are correct, and they were brush painted.
I never intended this to get out of hand, I never said anything negitive or with ill-will.
Your comments are fine germ, I just don't understand the anger behind them....and that's fine too, I don't need to.
The reason we did it is this;
It was flat black wit hred wheels, we bought it that way.
The fenders were just gel coat.
We were bored of it,
We have that truck as a daily, Regret (which by the way is an old race car that hasn't been painted since 69') and we never get time to work on our own stuff. it was fun to do something for our selves.
The thing has dents all over it, we didn't have to worry about hood fit and such.
It was quick, cheap, and most of all fun!
and it feels like for once in three years we can say we did something for ourselves.
Hugs all around,

They got nothing to prove to anyone, and that's the point. They build and drive what they dig and I doubt if they care all that much what naked bikers, or anyone else, thinks of their rides.
