Been wrenchin some on a '60 Bisquit post car. Was a 6 cyl 3 spd from the factory. Now its not. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Anyway, here's the question, tag is missing off the rearend (open rear). Does anyone remember or know the rear gear options for this car?http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If 'ya wanna know the gear ratio for an open rear all 'ya gotta do is...mark one wheel and the driveshaft (chalk?)...HOLD one wheel still...TURN the other wheel TWO revolutions(watch your mark).....watch the driveshaft mark and how many times it turns is the ratio....(easier with 2 people....but ya CAN do it alone...)With a posi---hold NOTHING---turn either wheel ONCE-- count the turns...bingo!)

Yeah.. it's quick cuz I remember going through a 59 and a 60 Dealer Album and they show the rear end ratios for whatever drivetrain combination you had in your car. Like for example, the 283/PG had the 3.08:1 and the 348/4-speed had 3.55:1 I think. I also heard they have what's called the Denver Rear... 4.11:1. Anyway so since 235/3-speeds are pretty common I've run into quite a bit of 3.36:1 rears. Of course... this is all moot if it's been changed out.

Hey Travis,
I wasn't pickin' on ya. Just not prepared for such a quick answer to the question.
And it sure is a lot quicker than pickin' it up and countin' it.
Probably not been changed out, the guy got it from his dad (a long time ago) and dropped the small block in it.
He's got a 3.55 that he was gonna put in cause he thought it was turnin a lot of Rs. Now I can tell him not to bother, and put quieter mufflers on it if its botherin' him.
Thanks again.

There's a real good chance that it's a 3.55 gear ratio. They didn't have tags but were stamped with a 2 letter designation on the passenger front side of the pumpkin housing. ( AO AM AH etc some have another first letter which indicates a different assembly plant.) I don't have my book handy, but if I round it up I'll list the codes or go to a chevy websiteand look for them. You might have to clean and wire brush the area and then wet it to see the letters. They are only about 3/16 inch tall and stamped by hand with a number set. overspray

Only way to know for sure is to count it. Back then you could order any rear ratio you wanted, just check the box on the order blank. There were standard ratios that went with every combination but unless you were the origional owner or knew the origional owner its a crap shoot. Besides its already been said, "what if it's been changed?"

Overspray,
Thanks for the info. If ya happen on to the book that will be cool.
Frank,
Probably right, just got off the phone with him. I think I got him talked into swapping a Poncho rear that we know the gear ratio. And its a stronger rear.
