so i'm sitting at work trying to figure out a conversion to to an alternator, and it dawns on me...is my car actually a 6 volt car?

when i bought it from the kid, it had a 12volt battery, and i replaced it with a new 12volt negative ground battery. this was 2 months ago. now, i'm thinking it's gotta be 12 cause i haven't blown any bulbs. (course, maybe the kid changed out the bulbs.) of course, last night i melted a bunch of wires coming from the regulator.

i cant go look at the car, cause i'm at work. and i cant find shit on the net that tells me. damn, i feel like a jackass.

anybody know if a 60 catalina is a 6 or 12 volt car?

feel free to snicker and kick me in the shins for my stupidity.

In all seriousness, it's 12 volt. Just re-confirming.

6 volts until 1954... 12 volts from 1955 'til now.
Are you doing a single wire alternator?

thanks guys.

ponchobilly, i'm thinking about it. however i asked about doing so on a pontiac board, and was told that a better route was a 3 wire application that most pontiacs used in the 70's. it's still internally regulated i guess. do you or anyone else know anything about going this route?
