OK don't laugh at me but I have to ask a question. Does Tudor = Two Door and Fordor = Four Door? On parts lists for my 49 Merc the model is either Mercury, Tudor or Fordor.
Ford chose the Tudor designation for his 2 door sedans because it sounded classy in the day. Tudor being a royal family in England and back then it mattered and promounced "Tyu-der" there. Fordor was the clever use of Ford when pronounced indicating the door count of the sedan.
I've not run into too many documents that refer to those terms for any of the 49 thru 51 Mercury cars. The 2-door version was always refered to as the 6 passenger coupe and the 4-door was the Sport Sedan. You must have some very early 1949 documents. Those terms were more common in the 1939 to 1948 vehicles where they actually made a coupe, a tudor sedan, and a fordor sedan. The 1949 was the first year where they called a tudor a coupe. Ford cars continued with the business coupe in the 49 to 51 years but not for the Merc. If you are refering to aftermarket or restoration parts lists then they may be refered to under any terminology that they thought was appropriate.
Oxymoron if I ever heard one. No on both counts, Larry. A bull fighter is a toreaDOR. And a MataDOR is a FINE looking AMC automobile. Sheeesh.
And I'm begining to believe that I'm the only human left on the planet that remembers AMC's ad campaign for that car... "What's a Matador?!" Why in hell do I remember that?
You are correct, it was aftermarket/restoration parts catalogs that I saw this in. Thanks for the complete definition, I love learning this stuff. Now if somebody could just teach me to complete my to do list for the car instead of adding to it all the time I'd be golden.
Yep, I remember that commercial. The car was in the guy's driveway, and the nosy neighbor was asking questions. Wasn't it under a car cover? Man, that was one funky looking car. Those boys at AMC design studio were definitely into the medical marijuana long before it was mainstream.
They are always a work in progress. There's a lot to be said about just getting a car driveable even if it is a jalopy. There is some enjoyment in the build but it has to be balance with the driving part or you get builders burn out for sure.
Asolutely! Get it up and going and drive it a bit and suddenly it gets much easier to see it through to the next mod you want to make. It goes from being "some day" to "how quick can I get this done so I can drive it again"...
Hey I had one and that car was fast ! It would smoke the tire pretty well and had more power than many back then . It was the sporty model . I know some were pretty damn ugly ! Mine was Maroon with all black interior . It was a good car ! Retro Jim
