Today, I drove from my house to the land of tall corn to see if I could get my latest old farm truck goin. I wanted to find out a little more about the $100 beater before I plunked down my hard-earned.....after all, $100 is a lotta money to be flashing around.
The Rocky goodtime van [tm] performed flawlessly, as usual, with solid 11 MPG performance on the way down.
When we got there [my buddy, Dar went with me] it was light out and found theives had liberated the ground cable, battery, alternator and the voltage regulator. The ignition coil had been removed as well and the air cleaner was lying on top of the carby, all akimbo. We busted ass to a local O'Reiley's parts store for a new coil and battery cable. I just wanted to see if the engine would run at first, before spending any money on alternators and other non-essential parts.
I popped the battery from my Porsche in the little pickup and primed the carb. Hit the key and the engine started right up! I wasn't able to select any special gear with the granny 4 speed shifter as it had broken off with the little selector end falling into the tranny. I used a pair of needle-nose pliars to remove it before lighting off the small block. I let the clutch out to find the tranny was in 2nd gear.......perfect! I cruised the truck around a handy hay field a little before shutting it off. The engine didnt' smoke, knock or act stupid. The clutch worked smoothly and after pumping up the tires, it steered ok too! I filled the new-looking but empty master cylinder and bled the master with it's own handy bleeder screw...VIOLA! It had great brakes too. Found a receipt for exhaust work done at a local exhaust shop so I looked under the truck to find 2 new mufflers on the dual exhaust system...really quiet ones......spooky, man.
When I came home, I ran the V.I.N. to find it was a 65 alright. Nothing more of note with the vin except to find it was built in Freemont, Ca.
The engine was obviously a newer SBC and according to the big 2 barrel carb, a 350 or 400. The letter code says it's a 1970 caprice 350, 2 barrel with 9:1 compression and 250 HP.....345 lb/ft of torque... I love it!
All for $100........yeah, I know it's a little steep for an old farm truck but I paid it and now, I own it...photos below.....

If anyone ever wonders why they never have any good luck,
it's because Rocky used it all up and there is none left for the rest of us. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Truck looks like a good find. About a mile from where I live there sets one that looks about the same but is brown in color. I'm guesing it doesn't run since it is in a pasture. The body looks fairly good from the road.
I see the pick-up you got has 14 county plates. You were getting close to where I live. I live just north of Kearney.

Here is a link to new fenders. They will cost several times what you spent on the truck.

Hey Rocky I didn't get out to the yard with the chevy truck today, the guy who is cleaning it up wasn't going to be there. I will be going back probly next weekend so I will check on them. If I do find any good ones I will most likely pull them while I am there just so noone else gets them. He is cool about it so if there not what you need he will take them back. Later Shawn

Fastcat.lemme know about the fenders when you find out. These are definetely "patchable" but some good used ones would be ok too.

Rocky - if you get frisky and want to get rid of the manual column let me know http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif! I have a powerglide column that would look nice if you want to go with a 'matic.

Its my trucks little brother! Don't part it out, its SO near being back in service...
Rocky

Dixiedog.fear not. It won't get parted out. As far as the column, it's the original 3 speed column but the top collar is pretty loose and shakey. prolly the main reason it was changed to a four speed. I'll prolly put in a late 60's, early 70's GM car tilt column...My kid has a kick-ass 6 toronado tilt-tele with no shifter or ignition switch. That'd be optimal.

I just wanted to say that in two days that is the third time I've heard someone use the word "akimbo". Nice score. Has Tuck bought one to race you with yet?

Shoebox 72...I couldn't drive it home yet. NO alternator and the shift lever was busted in half. I got a one-piece shifter and I'm making up a 1 wire alternator to take back down to the truck. My plan is to drive thet sucker back home [150 miles] under it's own power. Not sure what rear gears are in it but odds are it's 3.73's... that will make interesting interstate driving with the other traffic moving at a legal 75 MPH. I think I'll reserve a whole day to cruise back roads home. Maybe I can talk Hiboy 32 into going with me.

Rocky, you know, I was thinking of making a post about how to concentrate on one project...you know, a new years resolution kinda thing....but then I figured you'd be giving me advice, and I'd be worse off than when I started! Nice score on the truck...if you need any parts other than fenders let me know, i've got two '61-62 parts trucks...I would have given a hunnert for it in a minute!

nice score.they still are around here, but are really dying out.about 10 years ago we used to go gravel road shopping.just drive down the road.see a parked car with weeds gorwing around it.stop in.they where almost always for sale.cheap.now its hard.its more word of mouth or being at the right place at the right time, and they usually think there worth money or soemthing.ha ha

Brian, after seeing your car in person, I doubt I'll be giving you any car advise. I'll be asking you for advise. Jeff, I'll call before I go to get the pickup. My brother-in-law is doing the title dance with the state of Nebraska right now and he's never done it before. He actually thought he could waltz into the DMV and walk out with a shiny new title! HAhahahaha! He's in the middle of his learning curve right now. His latest approach is to write letters to the dead owner's kids, [to find the original title] who live in another state and are concentrating on ignoring him....Being a thoroughly moral man, he doesn't know some of the "tricks" it takes.
Being a Nebraska farm truck, it may not have had a title or keys for the last 14 owners.
