The import tuner group has me at a loss... When they say "These cars were never designed to go as fast as we're going with them..."
But ya look at a hotrod, real err rear wheel drive manual trans and the ability to accelerate without slicks because phsyics works with ya! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Without a doubt, the most rediculous car EVER to be seen has to be a mint '40 Merc convertible sedan that was converted (or should that be perverted) into the most horrendous pink and grotesquely finned monstrosity that ever appeared on the cover of a car mag. Yep, it was on the cover of, I believe, the little version of Custom Cars in the late '50's or early '60's and was built by a guy from Connecticut. I think his name was something like Hychko(sp?). It was so stinking ugly after seeing it you wanted to gouge your eyes out! The mag had a big spread (for a little mag) covering the transition from the slick convert sedan to the ugliest pile of trash ever to be seen by human kind. Ohhhhhhh, the tragedy of it all. I guess you can deduce from the above-I didn't like this critter one little bit. If I was at home in upstate NY, I would dig out my issue of that mag and try to scan in a pic for the rest of you to...no, that would be a torture to cruel to inflict on anyone. But, those of you old enough to remember will probably hate me for bringing it up again. I'm sorry!!!

Barris built some nice cars....but he also build some really ugly ones. The last version of the Golden Sahara (i liked the first one), AND the one that was build under his supervision a few years ago are hideous. Also, the Grecian. Puke. It might have worked if it wasn't yellow and green. Just my opinion folks!

Stupidest shit I've ever seen? Cars with bags, or hydros, wearing off the rockers and frames on the pavement. Now that's some STUPID SHIT!

back in the 80's, oh, come now...you remember, pro-street? tubbing a car ruins it, imo...to make it worse, there was some dude that took his mopar and TURNED IT AROUND BACWARDS on the frame, making what was the rear of the car the front, and the front the rear...
the most hideous factory offering, to this hillbilly's eyes anyway, would have to be from the lastfew years of the international harvester pickups to roll off the assembly line, I suppose for their purpose, they were ideal, a no-frills work truck, but those things were UGLIER than home-made sin....
this one isnt the latest of them, but shows the beginning of the end for what was once a kool ride...(I want a late 40s early 50s one)

Okay-
My .02 worth.
From the factory-
ANY Pontiac Aztec-looks like a tent on wheels
ANY AMC Pacer-Gold fish bowl on wheels
1961-62 Dodge Polara 4-dr sedan. UGH!
ANY Fast and Furious aborted import POS. I do mean ANY.
Modified- well the Grecian is aweful, that thing from EBay a few weeks back with the steering coming out of the cowl.
Thereare others, but these stand out.

The car Oldandcrusty is thinking of was called "Marratta's Mystery" and the only mystery about it was why the hell anyone would do that to a nice old car. This thing gave the west coast ammo in the east coast verses west coast custom wars for years. It was truly a monstrousity!

Jim,
The 'tubester'? Was that the one with the oddball exhausts sticking out all over the side? I thought it was a pro builder doing it, but it turned out to be some woodworking guru, who just had an urge to turn to steel. Chopped it three times as he was never satisfied with how much he had chopped it the previous time. Did a whole bunch of fancy metalwork and milling. Not bad for a 'chippy'.

ANY drug-induced creations by Roth. Hands down.
There were a few Caprices on here a while ago with 22" wire wheels on them. They had a 4 x 4 kinda look to them. To me, all that shows is some sort of genetic defect. Not sure if that's "the next big trend", but I think they're just a waste.

Oilcan, you da man. Frank Maratta was, indeed, the evil genius behind that pink piece of crap. I don't know what I was thinking. And, you couldn't be more right about the East Coast-West Coast way of building cars argument. I lived on the East Coast my whole life and I'm still trying to live that thing down!

I know EXACTLY what you were thinking;John Hychko(sp)was the guy responsible not only for that Crown Vic with the Caddy style fins painted metallic green(and striped by Andy Southard I think)but also that 53 Stude with the 59 Caddy fins and FOUR 59 Dodge front fenders(one set inverted)!Or how about Paul Seminick with the black and white 55 Merc that had an extra set of headlights attached to the hood and gigantic fins?
On the other end of the spectrum was Art Bentas(from Westford MA I think)who had the 50 Dodge with the Kaiser body panels. All black and he had floating headlights with angel food cake pans modified to make headlight rims. One of the most beautiful customs ever built! I'll see if I can dig up a pic.

Sorry Billy.Actually the workmanship in the car was really above board, but it was typical of the,"if some is good, more is better, and the most must be the best"school of thought which was unfortunately all too prevalent in the late 50's and early 60's.I don't think any state could really claim all the glory for that questionable line of reasoning.Who was it(someone on this board)who said,"Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder"?

The use of diamond plate kinda enters the ridiculous catagory.
Had to laugh on the IH truck, dad had one, in white, just like the picture.
My own personal "most ridiculous" file includes:
The 1982 'Vette with a continental kit. (I saw it twice, so I'm not halucinatin')
The early eighties Escort, with a fake convertible top.
The RX7, again with the connie kit.
That bleedin' ugly Seville conversion, where they lenghtened the front fenders and put in fake sidemounts.
Damn, I just vomited...excuse me....

12-29-2003, 05:46 PM
look at the background on the 37.. what kind of cars do you see plus it has a sliding rag top in it (just surprised it is not sitting lower with the wheel sticking up thru the fenders) I think it is real (may have been altered some via photoshop)... My guess is the guy was into mini-trucks or had a bagged and dragged truck and wanted something old.. Truck guys will cut up anything to put big wheels on it even if it becomes the ugliest thing on the planet.. (as I have said before, different is not always better)
