I know the subject is an old one but what are the essential items I should buy ? I have $75-100 from X-mas and pinstriping stuff is the one thing I didnt get but wanted. Better for me so I can pick out the really useful stuff I actually will need.

Yup, Hatch got it right. That plus passion, determination, and Practice, Practice, Practice!, will get ya started in the right direction.
Don't be afraid to emulate someone you admire that is already established until you grow in to your own "Style". Don't worry, everybody develops their own style, no matter what.
And quit drinking booze because when you're high it makes the lines wavey and when you're not it makes the lines shakey and the same goes for coffee/caffiene, it'll make your heart beat show in your brush stroke!
I was discussin this with a friend who also stripes shitty...
We decided that good pin stripers must have really low blood pressure, because otherwise you see the pulse in the line like a polygraph test! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

You may be onto something Doc.I will agree that trying to stripe when you're drunk or otherwise incapacitated contrary to all the old wives' tales is fruitless.Anybody who has to deluge himself with depressants to paint is probably severely hyperactive to begin with.
The low blood pressure thing interests me though. My blood pressure has been an almost constant 110/72 since I was in junior high school and seems to be unaffected by stimulants such as coffee(I don't drink soda pop and never have)in fact the reverse is sometimes the case.I can drink a cup or two of coffee(NOT DECAF!Tastes like dishwater!)while watching the 11 o'clock news and actually fall asleep during the broadcast.
SwitchBlade327 about all I can add to what was already said was attend a panel jam in your area and watch the people at work. You'll learn a lot. And don't be afraid to ask questions;most stripers I've met are really friendly people and more than eager to talk shop.I host a Yahoo website called the pinstripers page and there are a lot of pics and usually some pretty good tips in the archives.Several people on here belong and you're welcome to come over if you're not there already(I have a hard time keeping track of members).

Read the TechOmatic on Pinstriping.
Then read it again.
Now go and buy a Mack Series 10,an Excaliber, and a Mack DC Flatliner.
Available from mackbrush.com or pinstriper.com.
Also get a couple cans of 1-Shot enamel(not white or Silver),to start with.
A can of 1-Shot High Temperature Reducer,
a quart of Odourless Mineral Spirits,
a couple Stabilo pencils(White and Blue),
6 rolls of paper towels,
and a LARGE bag of Pretzels.
Ask Safariknut for the story about about Pretzels and Striping. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

12 years and it is still practise for me. I have found the Excaliber 000 from Mack to be the best brush I have used, don't even have to to trim it out. But I do tend to do a lot finer lines in my 'who daky's' than do most stripers. " The world can never have enough stripers"!!!!!

How do you guys clean the brushes after fully paint filled and gooey getting ready to dry into a hardend mass of non-useable back scratcher...
Thanks... what do I use to clean the brushes of oil based paint? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

The best way I've found to clean brushes after use is to rinse them in brush cleaner(either the 1-Shot cleaner or the good kind made of xylene, toluol, and MEK)and then lay them flat on a hard, clean surface(glass or a piece of metal).Take an old toothbrush and GENTLY brush through them from ferrule to point.Rinse and flip brush over.Repeat.Final rinse and GENTLY squeeze out remaining cleaner.DON'T squeeze the bristles and PULL them through your fingers as it will hasten the demise of the brush usually by breaking the hair off where it is fastened to the handle.
As for preservative I used to use Sapphire Brush Oil(out of business now) but have since bought the brush oil Mack Brush sells(Walldog Brush oil?)which is 100% sunflower oil from what I'm told.Works great and is reasonable(about $7.50 a quart).

Would this technique get rid of rustoleum in a brush?
I almost grabbed some turpentine to see if that would work...
Hate having cheap brush "hairs" stuck in the paint...

If you ask 10 different Stripers the same question, you will get at least 12 answers.
I use Odourless Mineral Spirits to clean up 1-Shot.
If you forget to clean your favorite brush, and you think it's dead,
1-Shot Brush Cleaner and Conditioner will probably save it.

I know that this post is old, but a buddy that is not very "HAMB" user friendly asked me if I could find this post for him.

Here a pointer and this is free for the pinstriper who wants to live a long straight line life...don't get Type 1 Diabetes and Diabetic Neuropathy - severe nerve dmage in both feet. The pain is unbearable 99% of the time and if they put you on hundreds of trial drugs like me you never know what day it is. The drugs really screw up life on the lines. And if you do shows like I do someone has to be with you at all times to remind you to take meds and to eat
After 30+ years of striping I've had to learn how to work around pain, prescr drugs and Diabetic complications. So keep your health and lifestyle habits in good standing otherwise you'll end up a mess and that means messy lines.
