My mom got some glitter today to put names on the stockings, when she was done, i took the rest and tried it as metalflake!! It worked the balls!! I mixed up some clear coat and put a bunch of the glitter in and i few marbles and sprayed it over a scrap peice of primered metal i had. It layed down awesome excpet for a few dust spots. I did about 4 coats till i ran out of clear, it left a really nice heavy flake and came out of my spray gun just fine!! Has anybody else tried this? It is a big money saver!! Nate

Cheap Flake will fade real fast in direct sunlight,if it doesn't melt in the clear first.

dude,....not tryin to be a dick. but you need to know that cheaper isnt always better ....yeah if it doesnt melt in the clear first '' which yours didnt '' it may fade in the sun during the summer. EVEN IF you use clear coat that has a uv blocker ....that will just slow the fading down a bit....just buy some real flake for automotive purposes ....i have been doing this a while and have seen first hand when people try to cut costs .i dont think you want to strip the shit off yer car when it backfires do you ???? ....bottom line is if you want something to last you gotta use quality products ...

I'd be afraid of using that as well, thinking it would fade. I suppose it would still be a good idea for a cheap way to do a dash or some inside parts as well, something that didn't get a lot of sun all the time. Michael's sells a lot of little paints like that, along with some nice looking pearlecents(sp?) too.

ive been to michaels ONCE............never again! I went in to get some plain black shirts for screen printing and when I walked in there were like 20 old ladies and ZERO males of ANY age in there. Its all flowers and crafts and potporri (sp?) and gay artsy female'y shit. And shit was so crammed that I had to ASK someone where the damn plain shirts were. The lady (old) looked at me like "What the HELL are you doin in here BOY?", you know the look. Anyway, I wouldnt do in there if there was REAL car flake for sale, its not worth the torment

so on DrJ's suggestion I checked out the glitterex web site. If you look at the tech sheets they have three products that are solvent and UV safe. Alu'flake,Holo'gram and Poly'flake, they tested it up to 18 months in miami with no color shift. Now how cheap is the stuff and where can you find some on X-mas eve?
Happy Holidays everybody http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Uhh, can someone post a craft-glitter-metalflake howto?
with pictures?
I got some of that shit at michaels gaycraftemporium, big-ass CHUNKY hexagonal glitter.... NEVER woulda shot thru a gun. I thought you just got the surface soaked with clear, dumped the the flake over it, and shot more clear. Am I right?
Attempted this process with some clearcoat on the exhaust tip of what would become the "$60 green Dr. J Volvo(tm)."
Needless to say, when that exhaust tip got smashed off, I left it in the road. The flake looked like chunky hell.
I don't get it... Does my lack of a vaginal oriface preclude me from ever being Marta Stewart VonMetalflake?

awwwww, man, you are among friends here, you dont have to be ashamed that you were there to buy some discount patchouli oil! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
actually, I go there to buy acrylic paints and brushes and crap...not to mention mats for framing my photos...im as guilty as anyone for visiting the place, I know they have patchouli because the witch (no kidding, for real hokus pokus chick) ex needed some....threw a fit about it not being pure or somethin....
I tried the glitter on the dash trick...there is a photo of it on the "Ft Smith 99" section on the "snap shots" of the Jalopy Journal....my old '51 Business coupe with the shrunken skull of elvis shift knob and leaopard skin/glittered to hell dash...
it faded fast from its multicolored beginnings, to a dull aluminum flake look....would be ok for a weathered kustom...they do it to rat rod trucks (weathered logos)...why not build a rat kustom?
Tried this experiment before the new HAMB was here. Worked for about 1 hour before the sun faded it.

Check Abomber30's Tech post about rattle can flake. He has some stuff that goes for about $10/can, looks great, and I don't think it fades. Good for small areas. Not sold in stores.

The real stuff is pretty cheap;and you don't have to worry about it fading,
or fell like a Big Fag going to MichalesHotMeltGlueAndGoldSparklesSuperStore.
And you won't have to lie when people ask you where you got your Sparkles. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
