HOW TO: Re-Sizing photographs

Re-sizing photographs is really fairly easy once you know where to go in your specific software. The problem is there are many different software programs out there that manage and alter pictures. Many of our less computer literate HAMB friends try to use the software that comes with your digital camera. Most of the give-away software that comes in the box with your camera or printer doesn't do all the fun stuff you want photo software to do. Instead of trying to tell everyone how to use the give-away stuff I'll recommend software that does the job in several price ranges.

If your not a HankCash wannabe and all you want to be able to do is re-size pictures then Windows Powertoys is for you. Download it from the Microsoft website here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx). It will be installed as a windows program that you can pull up from your start button-programs-accessories icon in win2000 or you can make it the default picture software and everything will open through it.

If you have $700.00 dollars sitting around burning a hole in your pocket you can buy Adobe's (http://www.adobe.com/) Photoshop. This is a professional program used by the artsy types. (graphic design and printing people) It does more than your average Joe really wants to be able to do and the price tag reflects that. Do a google search for photoshop and you will be amazed at all the resources and tutorials available online. Photoshop (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/main.html) is the standard when it comes to editing pictures but it is expensive and out of reach for your average hotrodder. Spend your money on the car!

Fortunately Adobe has a dumbed down version of photoshop called "photoshop elements (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopelwin/main.html)". At around $80.00 It is a very affordable and powerful program. It has a slight learning curve to it but you will be rewarded with becoming the master of your photographs. Open a picture. Click on the image pull down menu. click on resize, then click on image size. a box comes up that tells you the width and height in pixels. Don't get excited about what a pixel is. Look at the top of that grey pop up box and you will see black text that says" pixel dimensions". that is telling you how big the picture is. 1000 kb is 1 meg. The HAMB requires pictures that are uploaded to be 80kb or less. Play with the height and width of the picture until the pixel dimensions are 80kb or less. Make sure that the constrain proportions checkbox is checked as
it keeps the picture height and width proportional. If you don't understand un-check it and then make a big change in either the height or width and see what your picture looks like. it will be distorted and look goofey. Elements is what I use for everything. Take the time to learn all it can do.

There are several other photo editing tools out there and many of them are shareware. Shareware is free or cheap software that you can download and evaluate for a specified time. Eventually you will be asked to buy the product or it will not allow you to use it. The advantage is you can try several programs that are cheap and see if you can find one you like. go to Cnet.com (http://www.download.com/Design-Photo/2001-2016_4-0.html?tag=nav_dir) and downloads and try out a few.

Now someone needs to do a good long explaination of web hosting.

I have just gone digital and one thing that I do is use the camera setttings to take pics with a lower resolution. The "small" setting usually comes out with 80 kb or less.
I will be getting elements soon for my mac, since my cameras soft ware doesnt support my o/s

One tip I'll give you here, and don't say I didn't warn you about it later, otay?


Stay the hell away from any "PAINT SHOP PRO" demo's that you see online! When the demo runs out, or if you uninstall PSP from your computer, ON THE WAY OUT it turns every single graphic you have looked at (I repeat: LOOKED AT!) with it into a Paint Shop Pro graphics format that you can't undo with anything except a copy of PSP. It will also hide a file on your computer so that you can't just re-install another demo.

It gets really nasty if you were complacent enough to look for graphics in your windows system folders - if that happens, it can make windows crash!

I know this from personal experience, that's why I have a paid for copy of Macromedia Fireworks and Dreamweaver 3.

You don't have to shell full price for that kind of software though - Amazon.com has used graphics software that you can pick up dirt cheap compared to the original price!!!

as for hiding a file in your machine, its called the registry... EVERY program you install has information stored in the registry

I am about as computer dumb as they get, but I do it with the program paint. It was already on the computer (free). So, open paint, open your photo in it, from the toolbar go to strech/skew (I think it is under VIEW), then resize both horizontal and veriticle, I usually do like 30%, then save as a new name.

Avatars are funny.... not ha ha funny...

requirements:

1. they must be a perfect square 80X80 pixels
2. They must be 7kb ( killobytes )or less...thats 7000 bits

For elements I get the big picture that i want to make an avatar from and down size it so that the width is 80 pixels. The height will normally be less than 80 pixels because we are talking about car pictures.....and most cars are wider than they are tall :) . Now that i have a picture that has one side 80 pixels i will do a filter ( pull down menu) called sharpen. Then I will open ( create) a new blank photo that is exactly 80X80 pixels. Now I go back to my original picture...select all ( pull down menu)... copy ( under the edit menu).. then go back to my blank picture and paste my original into my new photo.
I now have space above and below my car. I can keep it transparent or I can fill it in with black. The picture is still too big to post as an avatar but i do somthing easy and wonderful about elements. I go to "save for the web" and play with the quality slide bar until it is 7kb. save it and you are ready to go.

If you don't have a perfectly square picture for your avatar it will get distorted. Ryans server will stretch you picture until it is a perfect square.

KoolDeuce, what I did was go to the first page of this STICKY and do what Crusty Nut said works for him ---- It worked for me and it is simple. Just be sure to click "FILE" and then"SAVE AS" and give the Picture a new name. Let me know how it works out for You

Sorry if I'm boring anyone...I'm just trying to learn how to do this too...

For this final 'large image'...

1: I'm using Photoshop CS3 (6.0 or higher will do the same)
2: The image is 12" X 9" but only 60dpi.
3: When I save it as a jpeg, I then slide the 'Image Options -Quality' slider bar that pops up when you are saving all the way down to a value of '2' instead of the usual '12' that I would use for a large printout.

I hope this helps someone out there in the community...

Someone may've already said this but if not, there's an easier way to resize; just go into paint, Select All, go Image: Stretch/Skew, and change 100% to a smaller percent; just be sure to keep both horizontal and vertical stretch/skew the same to maintain proportions.

Hay 30 Roadster ,when I went to the Microsoft website downloader to simplify re-sizing my photos ,so I can upload them to the H.A.M.B. I found it doesn't work on Windows Vista. I can tell you really know your way around a computer. Can you help me with dilemma?

29 Rats and 2345.coupe, If you get a Photobucket account you can set it to upload the pics to the right size automatically. If you ever get it to work with Vista, that Microsoft re-sizer creates a smaller copy so you end up with two files on your hard drive. Good luck.

Just a quick tip: i figured out tonight if you have microsoft office picture manager you right click on your photo,scroll down to (open with) then select the program.once your in there you go to picture at the top of the selection menu click on resize. then go over to the right side and in the large white box click the drop down menu select the 800x600 then click ok. it will resize and viola your all set. if you have more questions feel free to ask.:D

Well I have to try something! Damn I did it.
Windows 7. Go to PICTURES, Right click, click on EDIT, upper left you see RESIZE, click on it. To keep it simple, click on PIXELS for your size reading. (don't be surprised how big it is). Click on box to "KEEP ASPECT" In upper box, start with about 900. You'll notice you lower box will automatically come up, click SAVE. You got it. WELL I GOT IT. GOOD LUCK
