I've run one with my Chrysler electronic ign for 6 years, but I'd do as they say if you want a warantee. Others claim you can't run solid core wires with electronic ign. yeah, I do that too...It's fun to be a rebel http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think the reason that "they" say not to use a generator with elec ign is because the voltage spikes are much higher than with an alternator and can severely damage the ign system. At least that is what I have been told. I never experimented with it on my own.

If you're running a Mallory Unilite, invest in the spike filter/protector thingie. They're about $35 if I recall. If you're running something else (pertronix conversion?), I think you ought to run the alternator.

There's a company that puts alternators inside of generator casings. I think it's been discussed on here before & I know it's been discussed on Fordbarn & BillB Techno site. Concerns re: heat buildup & multiple failures (and they ain't cheap!). I had considered doing it and running it inside one of Red's finned covers, but I ain't that far along w/my project yet...

Here's the alternator generator setup. I would definitely talk to people before using it though. electrotech (http://www.electrotech.net/index.html)
