View Full Version : SHOEBOX FORD... V8 grill vs. the straight 6 are they .....
Different sizes????
I seem to recall that the grills are differnt sizes. I bought a center bullet "ring" and it was 3/4 of the size of a V8 ring and it didnt fit.
does that go for the wings on each side as well?
anyone know for sure... i swear they're different I'm second guessing myself.

I always thought it was just the centers that were different.
I think you've just been doing too much Canadian acid.

I didnt' know they were different. I'd bet the difference would be between '49 and '50. I kept my 6 cylinder bullet and mounted it upside down for a ford 9.

I thought they were the same but ford did some stranger things. I would think that in the name of saving money they would make them same. Are you sure you were looking at a rim for a '51? I think you would on top of that though... just a thought.

I know the 49 ring is different from the 50 (I've got one of each) but I think the V8 and 6 bullets are the same size.

Pretty sure 49 ring is wider than the 50. I know they are different and think thats the way it is.

you should put a skull in your grille and not worry about it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I like the 9 idea! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
The 6 and the 8 grilles are the same except for the center bullet stamping. The difference is between the '49 and '50 model years as everyone else here has said. The entire grille is different. The only thing that interchanges is the center piece of the top bar above the bullet.
Just FYI...the stuff that's hard to find is the smooth accessory bullet that some dealers sold to replace wrecked grilles (so that they had a universal part rather than one for both 6 and 8), and the accessory light that went in place of the center bullet and moved with the wheels.
OK thats it then...
put my mind at ease its the 1949 ford grill thats bigger... damn if I just realized something new about shoeboxs... one more diff between '49 and '50... holy shit.
thanks guys for all the help!
bass ive seen both the smoothie and the center light... neither of em i think id run but they would be cool to have on the shelf NOS...
Damn u bleed its not the canadian drugs.. its just the water hahahaaa... I just live too close to the border

If yer just talking about the bullet & not the rim, I think you may have a '51 bullet - they were about 3/4 the size of the 49-50. The 49-50 diff, as has been pointed out, is thickness of the ring, not size of bullet...

oh no ernie.... not a 51... its a 50 ring/ 49 ring.. the 49 is about 20 percent bigger no shit. I just confirmed it today w/ a 50 ring and the 49 ring I have. All I have is 49 grills... and one rusty 50 grill.
I got perfect rust free front clip for the hex... they're 50 fenders/ hood... was thinking about keeping it all 50, so i was gonna try and piece together the front clip. I need the corner lights and center grill assy. Mr. Butt Renyolds had some parts for sale that might fit.. MIGHT NOT. had to make sure I was looking at the right stuff...
hey and for the record jaker i had a scull in my bullet before you did... hahaha... mine was grafted in... im sure tokyos got a pic of that ugly scull..
later guys

Gotta admit I never had 'em side-by-side - learn sumpin new!! I guess the '51 would by tiny then, eh?
Personally, I like the '49 grille a little better. My dad's got a '50 Club Coupe I'm trying to talk him into puttin' a '49 grille in it. His first car was a '49, so I may convince him yet!
