I want to use these on my project. Are they 16"? Do they fit, or can they be made to fit a '40 ford front end? Whats the lug pattern? Do i have to worry about them fitting on tabs, the whole - wheel supported on the drum - thing I've read and seen about? [end question mode] Thanks guys.

You can swap your drums for 36-39 drums, then those wheels bolt on

Read the tire size on that tire. That'll tell you if it's a 16.

I beleive those are wide 5. While 40 Ford uses a 5 on 5 1/2. As they sit, you can't use them now. Not sure if you can use a 36/37 hub?

Cool thanks. It's not my tire, just found the pic on eBay. Looked like 16" but I wasn't sure. I'm using '40 axle/spindles/hubs but dont have any of the brake parts yet. So the '36-'39 parts will work just the same?

Nope. 39-48 parts will work the same. Do a search for the whole 36-39 hub debacle. If you could reach into ebay and pop that cap off of the wheel you'd see a BIG hole. Like 5 on 10 1/2 or something - Mart measured it once but I forgot the number.

There are drums for those wheels on ebay right now. I would really want to measure them to see if they are now worthless with too many resurfacing jobs.

PS - Finding CHEAP and USEABLE 40 ford front brake drums is like finding a cheap '32 grill shell.

No way will those just bolt on to your 40 stuff.
Those are 36 thru 39 wheels, and are 16's
with the wide 5 bolt pattern.

Its been awhile, but I think you can only use the 39
brake drums that have the wide 5 pattern. This was the
first year for hydrolic brakes, and they will
fit the 40 hubs and brakes front and rear.

Also you will need an adapter to take with you
to the tire shop so those wheels will fit on the
tire changer. But you can find those adapters
on ebay or at the swaps.

Go for it, they're worth it when you pull it all together.

I have two set of those wheels, 1 set of hub caps and 1 set of drums. I am dealing with a dude right now on selling him a complete set of 39 axles if it doesn't work out I'd trade the drums for some 5 on 5.5 drums. regardless I have a spare set of wheels and they are in nice shape. Will make you a hell of a deal as I'd rather see them on a car than in the scrap metal pile, even got 3 good roller 650 16s'... You pay the shipping I can remove the tires or send to?

Before you run out and buy 36 drums for those wheels make sure they will work on your 40 spindles. I think Bruce said the bearing spacing is different on the 36 drums. The 39's will work but I haven't a clue how to tell the difference between 36 and 39 drums. do your home work.

Not sure but aren't the 36 37 38 drums narrower than the 39's? It seems to me the 39's are the ones you want.
