Hi ,
i'm building my own A style frame from retangular tubing and looking for a good idea to mount the box.I should be mounted like in an
Model A to 34 frame to be perfect with the bumpsteer thing, but i don't want weaken the frame by "open it".
Any Ideas???
Reinforcement?
Thanks
Michael

Cut the hole on the inside face a little larger than needed, then box the opening from the inside face to the outside face. Clear as mud?

Why not mount the steering above the frame rail? Bolt/weld a 1/4-inch steel plate to the outside of the frame rail, with the plate tall enough to accommodate the three steering mount holes above the rail. In addtition to the mounting holes for the steering flange you also need a hole for the sector shaft to pass though. Weld on a triangulating plate on each end, front and back, and you should have a stout steering mount that won't compromise the the strength of the frame rail.

There's a real plus here, and that's the location of the steering box -- about 2-1/2 to 3 inches higher than stock, just about the same amount of normal axle drop. So, no need to mess around with the angle of the steering arm at the left wheel!

Mike, good Idea you are right , with dropped axle and a straight steering arm i keep the realtions the same...

You could fab a saddle similar to a rear leaf spring saddle welded to the top of the frame. Make it fit the round sector housing. A clean heavy strap over the top with 2 bolts down to threaded nuts or inserts in the frame top. Then you could eliminate the 3 ugly ears on the housing. Make it as wide as reasonably possible. Basically clamp it to the frame top. Just another option.

HotRod, Just curious,is your reason for not going thru the frame a visual thing or structural? If structural, have you seen failures? thanks.

Thanks for the Ideas.

Dusty if haven't seen any failures , but i built a strong frame and don't want to weaken it there. Yes It's for structural reasons.

I had to do the same thing to my fully boxed '32 frame. I ended up cutting the inner box plate out of the rail for a length of approx. 8". I then cut a "heavy" plate (3/16") to fill this hole.
This allowed me to machine the triangular hole on my mill without having to use a torch or such on the rail itself. In the end you weld the plate back in its place, clean up the weld and voila!
I would not be concerned about the structural integrity with that tiny T anyway.

I hardly recognize the '27! It looks great.

Is it me, or is that steering box upside down? In other words is it a rhd unit?
Mart.

Mart, it's just you.....The box is LHD :-)

and the turtle deck sides are made by me!!
Theres is not alot left (never was) orginal steel.

Thanks again for Ideas

HRM, I have the exact set-up like you are describing on my modified. Here is a picture. My steering box is actually a 57-60 F-100 box, same as yours but a slightly larger flange.

I'm having the same issue on my '31. I kinda like Tommy's idea of doing a strong clamp of somesort.

i think a `46-`48 (car) box and column can be mounted on the bottom side of the frame, similar to your photo. but with the pitman arm facing up to get it steering correctly and should better align the drag link parallel to the ground to help avoid bump steer.

The most torque will be from side to side with the steering wheel,I would get maybe 3 pieces of stock 2"x2"x1x1 1/2 " and weld to frame 2 vert, one horz and drill for 2 top holes.3rd hole goes in frame bolt.
