I replaced my speedometer gauge assy with an aftermarket gauge and have my original one for sale. All the gauges work, the speedometer works but the odometer does not. It will include several 12 volt to 6 volt reducers for the gauges. I have removed the colored lens for the backlighting so now it is white and bright. I have also modified it so the turn signal lights work and there is a high beam indicator now also. I repainted the needles on the gauges so they are a nice bright orange.
I am in Sacramento California and it won't be a problem to ship.

did you just take out the darkened lenses, or did you do anything different for bulbs, dimmer,s etc?

I opened up the housing and removed the lenses. They didn't allow any light thru. Then I just got universal light bulb holders at Napa and it was lit up perfect. I did only use the two sides lights as using all four back lights made it really bright.

thanks, I did the same with similar results, thought I missed something,FWIW, I believe the original numbers were painted with reflective paint and the dark lenses (actually a deep purple) combined with the paint, made the numbers stand out, almost like an early version of "black lights".
