It's a re-run, but it's better than cartoons. Maybe... It's the "Nostalgia" eppisode about flatheads, the Rat Fink Reunion (Roth was there still) and RF's '29. These guys are retarted..."check out those rust holes! That gas tank is the same kind in the moon dragster! whoa, this guy is crazy, a mexican blanket!!" RF's car is badass though. Too bad the hosts are jackoffs. Lot's of HAMBers cars seen in the Rat Fink reunion coverage. It's on again tomorrow I think.

the wurst car show is Street Rodder Tv....those guys are just idiots.the usually pick the biggest piece of crap car to feature,and if they show any tech they only tell about half of what you need to know. the "build a rod" section of the show makes it seam you can build a rod in about 2-3 episodes. they never show you how to make anything,or figure out something,they just show you how to buy some part and bolt it on. one of the hosts, Ted Jones is a complete zero,doesn't have a clue. he also does some lame boat show,all dressed up in some skippers outfit! why can't there be better car shows? yeah,i know,they have to make the show to have a mass appeal for the majority of people to satisfy their advertisers....but by dumbing it down,they lose the true hot rodder

I saw a hrdcover book yesterday...one in a SERIES from Monster Garage called:

"How To Customize Damn Near Anything"!!!

They took ya through wrenching on an old small block Chevy...then did a whole lot on custom paint,,,then show you how to detail your stock red Chevy Beretta????

I'm not doubting his skills as a race car driver, but he and that other guy are horrible TV show hosts. It probably has a lot to do with the material they are given, but some of the things they say are pretty rediculous.

Come on. PHTV is aimed at kids. (Isn't it?) It's nice that they get taught about flatheads and rat rods if their own fathers aren't doing it. You shouldn't expect to get much out of it.

That said, I wish that there was a realy good hot rod show on TV. Don't we all?

The car show that really bugs me is the Meguiar's Car Crazy. Barry Meguiar interviews a lot of interesting folks. Ed Iskenderian, for one. But he's such a fucking smarmy phony. He looks like he's running for office or something.

I actually liked the Nostalgia episode - I'll admit that I don't know crap about flatheads, and watching the show made me a little more interested. Plus, dumbing it down is good, it can make people who are stupid, automotively speaking, understand WTF is going on. Ok, nevermind. Was just mentioning it was worth watching. I don't know who it's aimed at, but I'm sure all age groups watch it. But now instead, go watch Victory by Design on Speed channel. If you have any appreciation at all for the history and innovations of exotics like Ferarri, Jaguar, Aston Martin, etc. you'll enjoy it. This guy takes the originals, prototypes, race cars, one of a kinds, gives a very informative history on them all and then drives the cars around on country roads like it were nothing. The Ferarri eppisode is on now...those early cars were BEAUTIFUL.

I don't know Dean all that well (just met him a couple of times) but Cameron is about as sharp as they come. Granted, he might be a little goofy, but that guy has been around hotrods since he was swimmin in his old man's sack (his dad is the late Steve Evans). And you have to remember, that show isn't geared for guys like most of the people here on the hamb. It is geared to the guy who is interested in cars and how everything works but might never have re-built his own motor. There are a lot more main-stream guys out there like than then there are guys like Cole, Tim Strange and Killer out there. It is kind of the same thing we have to do here at the magazine I work for. You have back off the technicel stuff a little so that every one of our readers (or at least most of them) can follow along and understand. Plus have you ever noticed how boring it is to read a technical manual or watch a technical video?

I was actually on PHR TV a couple times, and I wrote a couple segments of the tech portions (the animated parts). Some episodes were much better than others, but it was overall better than the other shows out there on TNN in my opinion.

I was standing under the (then) brand new Hundred dollar seats just off the starting line several years ago trying not to drown while waiting for the final rounds at the Mile High Nationals. We's been waiting for the 5pm air time for TNN to run the finals while watching the rains approach and then the sky let loose. Steve came up under the stands with me soaking wet and said "Ain't this some shit!" (Only time I ever heard him swear.)
I said "Yup, and it's all your fault too. They could have run the finals an hour ago."
So Steve says "Yea, I know it. I may have to sneak out of here tonight." The cloudburst ended, the track was dried and the finals finally got run a couple hours later. That was the last time I ever got to talk to Steve. Hellova nice guy. He used to race and run a track (Lions) long before he was an announcer.

Thanks, Smokin Joe...OGNC sent me a PM with the details on Steve. I always liked him, though I've never actually met him.

Popular Hot Rodding was my favorite magazine back in the 70s and 80s, and he did the early episodes of PHR TV back in the mid 80s. He always had that quality that made him seem down to Earth and genuine...rare in so many other TV 'personalities'!!

One other thing Steve used to do that impressed me. He used to take a mic and camera man into the stands when things were slow and interview people.

Steve knew damned well there wasn't room on the show for the interviews, and 1/2 the time I don't think they even turned the mic and camera on but they went thru the act. He just wanted to be with the fans and get their thoughts. Also made spectators think they were a part of the event. Like I said, nice guy...
