a buddy of mine used a pertronix electronic conversion..He seems happy with it, I don't know if they make it for your stovebolt, though

I havent ever done the swap... but from what I understand its hit and miss with the petronix units... they either run for 5-10 years... or they burn out in the first 6 months. I have asked this before, any running the new Crane "chip"? It is similar to the Pertronix with a built in rev limiter.

For the record, my boss hit 20 some thou on his roadster this year, all on the same Pertronix.

I have an old Ford pickup that only gets used to go to the dump a couple times a year as I have a work truck. It seemed every time I used it after sitting the condensor would be dead so I did the Pertronix swap and didn't have another problem. I just did an Olds distributor, too.

I'm a fan of redundancy and OEM (easily replaced) parts.

Pertronix don't make my cut of acceptable parts. Ignitions are too fragile to use difficult to replace parts.

I like keeping the points but converting them to a Capacitave Discharge ignition (which can be converted back to standard points if the electronics go bad) or using Dodge parts to convert a recurved stock distributor. I haven't use an HEI conversion like Daves Small Body yet but I think it's the way to go if you are willing to pay for it.

Whatever you run, carry spare parts in the car with you, along with the tools to swap them out.

This goes DOUBLE for any electronic ignition system!!

Electronic ignitions can and WILL fail at anytime, in any weather, and likely without notice!

(Points tend to give you hints, as performance falls off over time)

I've run HEI distributors in my GM cars cuz it's easy to carry a complete "known good" spare distributor, with cap, rotor, coil, module and pickup coil all installed and ready to rock! When the current system fails, drop the whole spare distributor in and you're mobile again!

With a Pertronix unit...have a spare, or a new set of points to change back to, handy.

I hate to sound like a scratched record but I alo used petronix on my 283 chev with 3x2 carbs. I have been running it for four years know with no problems. It was the easiest conversion to install and I got rid of that ugly ceramic blast resistor on firewall. Cost about $80 dollars

I've sold a few and haven't had any come back yet. Probably 1 a month since they came out. My guy Ross, at Crane, says they have about 1% failure rate.

Of course he's paid to say that. If you need a conversion with a rev limiter, try the Crane.

And if anyone on the board has trouble with anything... and I mean anything aftermarket, please get in touch with me. If I deal with that company, I can probably make something happen for ya!

I tried using the crane setup in my truck 190 ford. I had huge trouble getting it to work. it was always very hard to start.

I eventually went ahead and bought another pertronix. fired up quick the first time..

I have another FE hanging around and will try the XRI again. but for now its the pertronix.

ScaryLarry had a Pertronix setup in his small block Chevy and the thing up and died on him one day. He only had it on a couple of months and he didn't use the truck that much when he had the Pertronix in. We put the points back in. At least they won't leave him sitting along side of the road again.

Pertronix, mine is the traditional fifites model (flat black)...four years no problems...but I carry a set of points and condenser just in case.

sounds like pertronix is the way to go and i also think keeping the old goodies in the car is a very good idea
