its a 96 e 150 wt 300 ci el overdrive. it runs great then spits and back fires. black smoke. then wont go over 5 mph or just shuts off. turn it back on and its good for a few minutes more tthen repeet the same prob.. it has new brain ignation mod o2 sencer fuel pump cat mas air flow filters cant find it.thanks people smarter then me

When does it do it? when first started(cold) does it run good until it warms up? Does it always do it? Does it start OK when hot and run for a while then do it? its hard to diagnose a driveability question without seeing/ driving it, so please be as specific as possible.

I had a 90 Silverado with a 350 do the same thing. I changed the cool/hot sensor right beside the water neck and themostat.

what about an Idle air control valve?

IAC on my Taurus only caused rough idle and poor jerky run condition.

Had an EGR do the described problem to me on a 86 Olds Calais. Would warm up and cough, sputter, and DIE however far I got. does it after a little while mostly starts in highway driving new egr no problem in the start up mode

Maybe the tires are low. Don't guess!! Is the 'check engine' light on? EEC test it for DTC's & go from there.

no lite and its not pulling any codes

OK, you can take the EGR out of the system by removing & plugging the vac hose at the valve (might cause some pinging because it's not opening but you know it's not gonna stick open),the IAC usually causes an idle prob & maybe a slight trailer hitching feel at road speed, a leaking fuel regulator would cause most probs a idle (too much fuel) & would run better on acceleration. If you have access to a scanner that monitors PIDs watch MAF,MAP,DPFE,FUEL TRIM,ECT & make sure the air intake tube between the MAF & the throttle body is OK. Make sure the thermostat is working & the engine is getting up to operating temp.
