There's an ice making rig out in front of my work today. They are making a snow covered hill for the kiddies to slide down at our Christmas party tonight. (we only get rain in the Bay Area, so snow is a novelty to some...)

Anyway, I'm listening to this ice makers motor running, and it sounds awesome. Its revving at about 3500 rpm and happy as a clam. I get a closer look at the mill on this thing and, no, it couldn't be! Oh, yes. How cool is that???

That is rad. You should tell them that it'll run even better if they put some Offy heads on it! Can you imagine how hard the jaws would hit the ground if that thing was dressed up? A full race flatty in an icemaker.....rad.

Nice. Look at that wierd exhaust manifold. Sort of like a hybrid between the truck mainifold and passenger car manifold so the crossover tube goes right under the pan. Neat.

Gee, I can't believe they don't use a small block chevy on that ice machine! They are **smirk** more reliable and don't over heat **smirk**. Plus, you can't get parts **smirk** for those antique motors anymore!

Sometimes in ol WWII documentaries they show these mine-clearing devices mounted on the front of a tank..a big rotating drum with a bunch of big chains flailing around.
Used to explode mines by beatin these chains on the ground.
Well just guess what powered it...yes.
Inside the drum was a good ol flathead V8.
Must have had the shortest and hardest life of any motor ever built.
Also read that some US torpedos used flathead Fords, I think to power the big compressors that propelled the torpedo.

Another WWII Flathead use: The British used radar equipped bombers (from dim memory, some B-24 variant) to attack German subs running on the surface at night from French ports out to the Atlantic via Biscay. Subs had to run on the surface to get anywhere, since they were very slow and limited when submerged, and night had been safe for them for the early part of the war. Radar put the planes in the general area for attack, but was not nearly precise enough for the actual bomb run--so, the planes were equipped with a humungously powerful searchlight that was turned on at the last minute, giving the plane a chance to kill the sub before it dove. The searchlight was powered by a Ford run generator in the plane. And, don't forget the Bren carriers...
