I am in the middle of installing my avatars GM 70's gas tank. The straps are in excellent condition and fit in the bottom of the tanks indentations. My question is: Is there suppose to be some kind of rubber insulation that fits between the tank and the straps? Or, is it merely the tanks bare metal against bare metal straps? Or does it make a difference?
General Motors used "felt paper" as a factory insulator to go between the straps and the tank. If it worked for the General, it'll work for you.
I have heard some guys using strips of inner tube. Find a Schwinn Stingray with a flat tire and use the inner tube. That will keep it "traditional"
When I read your suggestion, I was thinking that that was a really good idea. Then, it dawned on me that I did that a couple of years ago. Wow..I had a good idea!
An old serpentine fan belt will work also. It's a bit thicker, but worked perfect on one of my projects.
