View Full Version : Paint went everywhere! pics

I shoved all my car related projects off to one side on my garage workbench to mix a little paint for an interior house paint project. The gallon of latex paint had been sitting on a basement shelf for about 3 years and needed a good mixing. I don't own a commercial paint mixer but I gotta bench-mounted drill press! I made a rudimentery mixer attachment from a bent 3/8ths bolt and chucked it up. Just before I turned it on, I took off my favorite Jalopy Journal [tm] shirt and put it in the house.
Lowered the attachment into the bottom of the paint can and turned it on at the lowest speed on the drill press.
Sheeeeeeeit, this was going smooth as baby shit. The paint was mixing nicely and getting a little thinner every minute. Every once in awhile the attachment would just nick the inside wall of the can and I'd adjust accordingly until it really gave a good kick and the can spun outa my hands! The attachment rose up a bit and paint began flinging wildly outa the top of the can, all over anything that was chin height, I still didn't have the Goddamn can under control, so I couldn't let go of it to turn the drill press off until the entire contents were all over me and my precious garage. Good thing Mrs Rocky wasn't home to hound me about getting paint on the house carpet because I finally got the sumbitch stopped and immediately stripped. I wiped myself off as good as I could with shop rags and tippy toed through the house to the shower. It was latex paint and came off pretty good with soap and water but by the time I got back to the garage, it had dried on all the surfaces..................

This afternoon, I went out there to clean up a bit and found about an inch of paint still in the can. I painted the wall and my workbench after putting all my tools away...looks a little better but the compressor will just have to look like shit.. STUPID PAINT CAN!

Now I don't feel so bad about the "Power Steering Pump Incident"!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

When I worked at the Ford dealer, I rebuilt a power steering pump for the first time, and the clown posing as a mechanic in the stall next to me said "Hey...make sure you test it out before you put it back on the car!"

"How do I do THAT?", I asked?

"Aw, just use your impact gun and a socket...fill up the reservoir and see if it pumps any fluid!" he tells me!

The result was a geiser of power steering fluid blown into a fine mist and covering damn near everything in three bays! My service manager was not impressed...and the porter who got to clean it up was shaking his head...again!!

(You can just flip the shaft with your fingers and shoot a blurble of power steering fluid up a couple of inches...imagine the show when I pulled the trigger on my impact gun!)

That is some funny shit, Rocky! I can't begin to count the times I've clevered myself into disastrous situations, usually in the interest of saving time -- or avoiding a trip to the auto parts/hardware store.

That you took off your trick T-shirt beforehand indicates that you've been down similar paths in the past. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

looks like you were visited by a pack of flock of seagulls Rocky -- kind of a back to the beach look. A buddy of mine was heating up a rattle can on a hot plate in his shop -- and went off and forgot it. All of a sudden it dawned on him that he'd left the hot plate on a high -- just as the can blew. Lucky he didn't get any shrapnel -- but he had a hell of a time getting bright red the enamel off his mug. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I looked at a 62 Chevy today with a 3" hole in the windshield. They guy that owned it had a can of Freon sitting on the dash. It blew on a 108 degree day!!! He never found the can but the hole looks like an Armor piercing shell went through it.

When I moved into my new school shop, I found an old paint shaker. Old enough that it doesn't have a lid lock on it. Now there's a great big blue stripe going up one of my walls and along the floor. oops http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just think Rocky, that could have been Imron...

I'd be laughin' my ass off if the same thing didn't happen to me. I was getting the front porch ready to lay some tile and was mixing some self-leveling super concrete in a 5 gal bucket. I did the same thing with the drill press, only difference is that I spent the money on the prescribed store-bought paddle wheel mixer tool. Got the drill set to the suggested speed, set the 5 gal bucket on the table, filled it with water and the concrete mix, and turned on the power. As soon as that mixing paddle started to turn, that crap came up outta that bucket like a goddamn volcano. That shit was all over the floor, the walls, the drill press, you name it...it was covered with it. I think that there are still some splotches of it on the walls behind my workbench!
I hate it when you think that you are doing the right thing and then it bites you in the ass. Hope you got all that paint off your drill press Rocky....

Had a can(brand new)of battery cleaner laying on the front seat of my 68 Chevelle one summer day and came out to go home, noticed the windows were all dirty, then noticed the huge dent in the bottom of my dashboard where the can had hit!Found the can in the back seat flatter than hell! What was weird was the dash was curved where it hit and very strong at that point. Can't even imagine the force that thing developed!
Glad no one was injured.I have WAY too many tales of me F##kin' up with paint.

Is this a garage painting Tech Post gone bad?...I think we've all had similar experiences.

Rocky
12-14-2003, 10:03 PM
Yeah, it's bad Steve but not as bad as the time my brother and I were trying to get a blue spray paint can to work. We were in the kitchen of a rental house and when the ice pick finally got the can to work, it wouldn't stop!
The refrigerator looked so good in blue, we flamed it!
Tech tip: Nothing I know will take blue enamel off white tile kitchen floors without destroying them...

One of my old boss's liked to go to auctions. Came back with a "mixer" for me to use. Looked like an electric shaft with a propeller on the bottom. Worked great!
Had a funny emblem on the front...looked familar but I couldn't place it. Used it all summer and then decided to give the case a good cleaning. When I turned it over I discovered that it was originally used in the NUCLEAR Lab of a local hospital...something about mixing isotopes(?) whatever the hell they are!

Well...my paint jobs had a great "glow" to them anyway! LoL
Not too sure about the effects on me!!!

Alright, alright! Now you're gonna catch me inna lie too! The offending implement of destruction is in reality a 40 ford clutch or brake linkage rod with a 3/8ths bolt attached to it. It was easier to refer to it as a bent 3/8ths bolt. I chucked up the threaded part and let fly...

12-15-2003, 12:16 AM
next time -put the lid on tight then spot weld the bolt [off center] onto the lid......turn on-RUN LIKE HELL! THEN come back and switch colors..... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Do I spot a "Norrlands Custom" sticker?
Norrlands Custom is a Swedish mail-order parthouse for US-car parts, mostly engine and chassis parts to later models but also som for the more common makes of older cars. Sells alot and have decent prices.
