I am rewiring a stock 55 Chev Bel Air with a 235 six banger.
Oil light does not come on with ign in the on position. Tester at front of sending wire with switch disconnected reads posative. What the heck is wrong? Bulb and socket are new. Socket is the plastic non surface grounding type. Threads on the sender were clear of any debris. Am I to figure that the sender is bad? I bought a new sender wich is the 3-7 pound type and book is calling for 4-6. Can I use this one? Any drawback on that. Anyone one have any test ideas or suggestions? This is an EZ wire kit. Does it matter wether the other end of the sending wire is connected to ign 1 or 2? I have 1 and 2 jumped at the ign switch to keep the system in circuit based on the direction of the tech at EZ wire. Good people by the way.
Phase two gas gauge only moves slightly to 1/4 on a full tank. Test performed says gauge good and new sending unit in the rear. Any thoughts on this one?

have you checked the ground to the dash?

Get an extra piece of wire and make a temp ground. If its works, its a ground problem

Ok the oil light is solved. It was a bad sender which was a$2.79 part from Auto Zone.
Now on to the gas guage. I ran a new ground from one of the sending unit mounting screw to the body good and clean. The gauge does the same thing 1/4 on afull tank. The sending unit is new. I pulled the sender side wire off of the gauge and it shoots to full. I then put a test light on that terminal and it was adull glow only half as bright as the ign side. Any one on this?

sounds like the gauge itself is not grounded...like jerry said, check the ground to the dash, better yet ...run a ground wire to the case of the fuel gauge

Ran ground from cluster case to body. No action on gauge. Popped off sender wire from gauge and it shoots to full. Anyone else?

Are the Ohms in the sending unit correct for the Gauge???
If the resistance is not matched to the gauge you will get incorrect readings

I love oil lights. They tell you what that annoying BANG, KLUNK, KLUNK, KLUNK sound was.
Oil lights belong in the grocery getter, not the rod! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think the stock sender is 35 ohms. The kit may have been made for the later 90 ohm gauges. Give the kit manufacturer a call and check.
I like to have BOTH an oil gauge AND light. It gives me another warning if I'm hypnotized by the road!

make sure the gas sending unit is the right ohms for the gauge. also on the oil light use a autometer sending unit part #AUM 3241 with a brass adapter for highth. it has 2 wires, 1 to stock light other to ground. it is rated at 15 psi, mine goes off when car is 1 quart low ('60 283 and '64 230 with 20/50).

Well Super Duper Tech dudes, can you check a gas filled float with an OHMS tester? Thats waht it was...like a mini bud lite filled can it shook and sloshed. The guys on Chevy Talk really know their stuff as does the tech cat at EZ wire. Case solved. I am just happy it was not the $100 gas gauge or the $60 sender http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Actually.... YES !!! it would have read 1/4 the ohmage of full!!! You DID check the ohmage--didn't ya ??? next on the list of suggestions woulda been a SUNK FLOAT....PROVIDED 'ya gave us an ohmage reading !! if 'ya don't give ALL the info it makes it very hard to diagnose---guess eveybody's crystal ball was broken......

PS...good info guys....'ya can't come up with a correct answer without ALL the NECESSARY input.........
