Just checked out Wilson Welding and Machine's web site - www.wilsonweldingandmachine.com (http://www.wilsonweldingandmachine.com) - and noticed thet they are repopping 39 Lincoln backing plates and brakes mechanisms.

Well that got me thinking again!!! Maybe I should run lincoln brakes instead of the F100 brakes I was going to run. You see I've got 2 daughters and I now have the responsibility of providing the safest vehicle I can for them to travel. This lead me to swap the 48 brakes for F100 brakes, so as to maximise the car's braking efficiency.

But I have always wanted to run 12" brakes, so Lincoln would do it.

I've checked AV8's book and no-where in it does it say whether or not you can use 48 Ford drums and hubs, instead of the lincoln ones.

So - Can anyone tell me if you can use 48 Ford hubs and drums on either original or repop lincoln backing plates and brake setups???

Stove,

Short answer - I don't know if you can use your drums or not.

Long Answer - Most everyone who does this also runs Buick drums using the 46-48 hubs.

For the best answers, check with Bob Wilson himself! He will be able to answer your questions & hook you up with a complete setup if you so choose.

Having said that, the F100 brakes will be a quantum leap forward in braking than the original brakes to begin with - the Lincoln/Buick is probably overkill, but that's half the fun, right? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ive read somewhere that you can use various 48-56 3/4 and 1T backing plates and a later model (unknown year) drum with the 5 1/2" pattern.
Anyone know about this??

Lincoln '39-48 rear backing plates are 'shallow' and have holes for E-brake cables. '39-only fronts are also 'shallow'. Shallow plates can run with Ford drums and on Ford spindles with a little grinding. '40-48 fronts are 'deep' and used to require you to use either Lincoln spindles, or Ford with much grinding including the kingpin top, and only Lincoln drums (hard to find with meat left). Obviously shallow plates were prized, rears could have their holes filled. Now, Dave Wilton makes adaptor rings to space out deep plates on Ford spindles like shallow plates are. Incidently, Lincoln plates have an outer double-lip which makes them look HUGE, this why I have them. If you run Buick drums you must remove this lip (not hard, just spot welded on but ruins them), Bob Wilsons plates dont have this lip. If you run plates with the lip you must use '41-later Ford drums with the flat lip edge and the radial fins, '40s with the rounded lip will not clear. Their is a set of deep plates, spindles, and drums on Egay that shows the difference in spacing as well as how cool Lincoln drums are. I want those so dont no one bid on em or I'll,I'll...D'UH OH!

YES you can use your Ford drums. I use Lincoln brakes with the wide 5 drums on my 37 pickup

Later Lincolns with the spacer. Where can you get the spacers?

I have Lincoln front drums for sale or trade.

Dave Wilton advertises on the Fordbarn.com and on the Lincoln Owners website.
I stand corrected, you can run Buicks with the double lip obviously with a little machining, and you can grind some material off the lip of '40 drums to work.

Anybody wanna hear about my faggish Teletubbies T-shirt I started wearing before it was faggish?
