Well here's my contribution to tech week. My frame jig, I used it to built a racecar now a 31 Tudor. stretched 5" and Z'd 6".There's nothing to technical about building a jig. I went to my local scrapyard and picked up some 6"X 14ft I-beams about 20ft of 2inch square tubing and some 1/4 X 4" plateing. First I welded the 1/4 X 4" plating to the ends of the tubing. 20" long tube and a 6" long plate

Then I tack welded it all together, then bolted it where I wanted it to break down later for storeage. Once I had it square and level I burned it together and walla here it is, nothing fancy but hey
http://photo.starblvd.net/~MP33/1-2-5.jpg
Once I was satisfied with the jig I set my A-bone frame on it and started securing it to the jig. Most of the mounts I made are bolt on so I can remove and reinstall it if I want, but I did weld a couple a supports while I Z'd it for extra insurance. Here's a pic during this period.
http://photo.starblvd.net/~MP33/1-3-2.jpg
And here it is all square, level and secure. Ready to cut http://photo.starblvd.net/~MP33/1-3-3.jpg
Next I marked where I wanted to cut the frame for my Z, This was tricky for me cause I wanted it far enough back so it ended up under the rear seat but yet in a wider part of the frame. I settled on 9" from the center of the rear crossmember forward. Then marked and measured. Next was the Z tubing, I used 2X3 3/16 wall rect. tubing and cut it like I saw on another posting about Z'd frames(thanks Hambers). i think Grimlock(If not i'm sorry to who did) posted a pic that gave the idea for mine
http://photo.starblvd.net/~MP33/1-3-5.jpg
After that was completed my buddy Craig came over and helped me. First we remeasured everything and double checked everything before we made a cut. Once we were satisfied we commenced to cutting and grinding.
http://photo.starblvd.net/~MP33/1-3-4.jpg
Next we tack welded eveything together and then took more measurements, cross square, crossmember to crossmember, level everything and it came out perfect 6" drop and a 5" stretch.
http://photo.starblvd.net/~MP33/1-4-2.jpg
After it was tacked good I welded it solid and measured along the way.

Well Thats about it for now. I still have some welding to do on the bottom, but that will have to wait till I can flip it. I want to thank everybody on the hamb for making this possible for me to do. Without your help and advise i"d be lost. Hell I just learned to post pics this afternoon( I hope they work). So this was a beginners take on how Frame jig/frame Z construction is done. Thank you all!!

Ps. if you see anything I did wrong give me a shout please.

Great post, MP33! Looks like a pretty sturdy frame jig, and a good job Z-ing your frame! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Are you planning to add an x-member or other stiffening supports to it while it's clamped in the jig? (to help KEEP it straight later on!!).

Keep the pics and how-to stuff coming...you're off to a Hell of a start! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Great step by step, very informative, and the photos add alot. The old saying a picture speaks a thousand words is so true.

Will it be done by BTT50's in June?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How big a welder did you use? What did you use to make those perfect cuts???

What is the purpose of the stretch, of lengthening the frame? would a straight vertical step, without stretch, be structurally unsound?

just wondering!

Glad you all liked the post. It took me over an hour to post it cause I'm such a slow typer,Haha.

Fat Hack; Yes I plan on leaving it on the jig till I get some kind of crossmember/X in the frame.

Ryan; Thanks for the compliment and thanks for the Hamb!!!

Denise; Hoping to have it done by BTT50's 2005' Thanks for the photo posting help.

Shiny; I know I can weld underneath I'm just lazy. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Burndup; My welder is a Lincoln SP 170 T, I used a horizontal bandsaw for the angle cuts and a sawsall with a new blade for the notch. I want to run an Olds or Chevy or someother type of V8 and don't want to recess the firewall because of clearance problems. Abomber lengthened his at the firewall, I thought I could kill two birds with one stone and only cut the frame once.

Shifts; Give me a call and I'll be glad to help. 748-5248

Right, just lessen the angle on the tube to probably 10 degrees instead of 45-46 degrees. That's just a guess on the angle. Mike
