Anybody have one of these yet? Do you like the way they work?...Anybody have any experience with Old School Flake?
I purchased some of their flake for the first time, I haven't had a chance to form an opinion yet.
Their Flake gun looks interesting...see link below......

I will give you my experience with flake and since I am a raw beginner you can learn from my first hand thoughts. I dont think I picked up any bad habits to pass on yet http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I did this a while back on my Steelies. I used REALLY old trad flake. We used my pals Binks model 7 that has shot so much paint thru it that the orifices look like a gatlin gun! Some things I found.
1: Keep the flake color close tou your base color. mine lookes fine, white base with red/gold/silver flake. It might be too dramatic for some folk.
2: Gravity is your enemy! Do a test panel first. I had a lot of flake in the cup that wanted to cause curtains and hangers. Extra flake in the gun proved I used too much for the job at hand.
3: Plan on a few extra coats of plain clear over the flake. BURY IT. I scrimped on this, it looks good but could have used 3-4 more coats of clear in the end.
Thats all I know so far. That gun looks interesting.

Yea...I've shot purple flake over a white base...didn't realy care for the look....but I plan to flake the roof of one of my Rancheros.
I'll use a purple base with violet pearl and cover that with this Old School Flake Shifty Purple .008 size and over that the bigger Shifty Purple flake. Then cover the whole thing with overly watered down (reduced) purple candy.......
I know Donnie, aka LownSlow, has the hook up on what to do????(hint) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
If you want to find some of the OSF brand off-color and uncommon sized flake, check out eBay. It's on there all the time (contrary to what they say in their auctions.)

i dont know about their flake as i havent used it ....but the gun seems pretty strange.......i used to use a harbor freight gravity feed gun with a 2.0 tip ...and keep backfushing the gun..i.e....put my finger over the tip and quickly pull the trigger to stir up the flake....i would do this after every other pass ..other wise you end up with a shitload of flake in the beginning and straight clear by the end .....''not good'' ......now i use an agitator cup .....this has a air operated paddle that stirs the flake constantly while i am painting....with as much flaking as i do ....it made sense to invest...because it is much faster for me and we all no time is money ....also i get a much more even job with less work......not cheap though ....even with my discount it was $550 and thats only the cup .....not incuding the gun ......but for the weekend or once in a while guy the harbor freight gun would be my choice ....usually about 45 bux on sale ...oh yeah i get the hvlp ....you save alot of material with it ........and i just like it better than the non-hvlp guns.....as always feel free to email or pm me if ya got any questions ...i am sarcastic on the hamb '' arent we all ?'' but i also am more than willing to help and answer any question i can .......

The agataiting gun is the only way to fly. ours we found on the back shelf of the autoparts store collecting dust. I am a silver flake nut the glowbal style. flake clear and clear and clear. and then apply the candy. Candies make the colored flakes look lame as hell. but the spindrifts and abalone are cool.

i agree about the candies....thats ALL i do ......you get a much deeper look...it looks a mile deep like you could reach into it .......i always start out with silver flake .....well i have used gold too . but only by a customers request i prefer silver .....wish i had found my agitator ...nice score ....

If ya don't spray enough to justify the hi-tech agitator cup, throw a few (clean!) stainless nuts into your cup and swirl it around after every pass. Keeps the flake suspended pretty well...

that only woks in a siphon gun situation though ...in a gravity fed gun they will just clog up the gun........

Never shot flake with a gravity feed but in the suction feed gun this works like a champ.

I'd have to disagree a little bit with that...
I also think it can look just fine, if not bitchin'..!!
I think it all depends on the colors used...
The roof on my Rivi has 3 different colored flakes...
big and small silver, gold, & blue...
with the Blue Lapis basecoat, the flakes, and Pagan Gold Candy on top,
the flakes look, gold, 'golder', and green...with an overall Olive color...
(the color 'goal' was 100% my idea too...)
I'm not sure of the exact procedure or layering order that was used
with the flakes, but I think it turned out awesome..!!
(I'll have to wait for Donnie's final approval to be sure though..!!) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I concur! That roof looks absolutely bitchin'.
Outright bare flake doesn't have the effect that slightly buried flake does.
I agree, once you lose the brilliance of the colors.....what's the point? But the bigger flake can reflect thru some heavy shit.......but I suppose it's all a matter of preference.......
I wonder if Donnie has an apprentice programs for the experience challenged???? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
