ok it teck week and this trick has helped my a few times before.it not really tec but here goes anways.ok yall no the first part forsure just put the motor on top dead center . i always pull the spark plug to make sure its toped out.if u go to drop the distributer and it wont drop into the gear right off. heres a easy trick.lift the distributer and spin clock wise to the next gear drop it in pull it back up and and spin and drop it again on the next gear.make sure u dont skip any gears in the revaliton. sometimes one whole revalotin will do it, some times it takes 3 revolitions .but it will drop straight in after a few times.im not sure how it works but i think every time u drop the distributer it moves the gear little by little untill it goes right in . im only 24 so i dont no how manny people use this method but a old timer showed it to me and its worked every time

hell that takes to long lol, just hang on to the base of it and get someone to bump the key. It'll fall in...

the problem is it with the oil pump, i use a priming tool or an old dist shaft and simply turn the oil pump and it drops right in.

Or even easier is just reach a screwdriver down and turn the pump drive a bit so it lines up with the dizzy gear. Just remember that the gear turns a bit coming out due to the bevel cut, so make the pump drive a bit closer to what it should be when all the way seated.

This way you don;t have to lose your engine TDC position.
