Today my driver's side axle broke while driving my flatty powered 1935 Ford pickup down the hill to the grocery store. Luckily it was at a spot were I could safely get her off the road. The rear end was just rebuilt w/ new bearings and seals along w/ a new ring & pinion (3:78). We inspected the axles and the both had excellent keyways and looked great. New keys were installed during the reassemble along with new break drum retainers. Thank God I had finally got around to installing the break drum retainers that had been sitting on my workbench for the last two years! This should be a fair warning for all you banjo owning procrastinators. If I had not installed these bad boys, I would have been in a world of shit when my rear wire wheel & tire passed me on the left. Christ, I can only imagine what my steel rear fender, bed & running board would have looked like after that beating! Does anyone know of a good source for an axle?
Nice warning! Most of us think things like this wont happen to us.Yeah Right

Just as a suggestion, you might want to
consider going to 37-40 axles.
They are a little bit larger in dia. and
You will need to change out the
carrior bearings to match the later axle.

Oh shit I gave my "spare" 36 axle to a friend!!! I owed him a favour for some storage.
I suppose frieght would have been a killer.
Don't you have to watch the number of teeth on the spider gears. They changed the number of teeth somewhere along the line!!!
one source of the retainers ice mentioned is vern tardell...
Iceberg -- I'll ask Tardel if he has an axle for your '35 and let you know the particulars this evening.
Iceberg -- As promised . . . Tardel has axles, $75 for a perfect one. If you are interested, he needs to know if it's a 16- or 18-tooth type, and your shipping address.
