View Full Version : How do I get the ****ing "Last Chance" ad off my R&C?

DrJ

I just got the February 2004 issue in the mail and there's a "Last chance to give a subscription" ad page GLUED TO THE COVER of the magazine!!
What the FUCK?
Will the glue melt with an iron without taking the magazine apart at the same time?
I, like many other people, COLLECT these magazines and the fucking glued on "gift offer" fucks up the cover!!!

This is NO WAY to get me to write a check!

This sucks big time... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

So who's got a good TECH REMEDY to taking off this piece of SHIT with out destroying the magazine?

really depends on the kind of glue. Most magazines use the stuff that will just peel off. I'd try using a heat gun, or blow dryer or something to soften it up and slowly roll or peel the shit off.

dude chill. I'll send you mine if my kid hasn't got crayon all over it already. I hear you though I hate all that this is your last issue crap and renew letters. It seems to have gotten worse lately at least with some of the mags I subscribe to.

Depending on the exact adhesive,it might come off OK just like Post It notes.
Second choice is a hair drier.

Third choice is a gallon of gas and a road flare. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I collect those things too. I have a card to send in for a subscription from '61 for 2.00/year. It has no good till...date on it, I wa s gonna send it in w/check for 2.00, but decided it was more "valuable?" left in the mag. Maybe 50 years from now that copy will be more "valuable?" because of that damn ad.

They all suck. As diverse as R&C, Auto Restorer, Hemmings, etc are they all use the same annoying tactics. Same goes for Readers Digest and some other rags my family subscribes to.

R&C is particulary a PITA when you get 2 different sub come ons; one from Colorado and the other frob Florida.

They all go into the shit can and I resub at the last minute.

Yep, This is some Florida Fuckheads Fucked up my magazine.

The hair drier is not going to do it. This add on IS the back seam of all the pages, or appears to be. If I take it off I'll just have a pile of loose pages left.

FUCK! <font color="red"> </font>

One of the reasons I don't subscribe to mags anymore is the crap glued on the covers. I hate looking on the cover and seeing...

How to build a 500HP small block
Page(Name and address tag here)

Or having my address stuck in the middle of a great cover pic! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I know who I am and where I live. Mag guys please put the plastic wrappers on the mags and put the address and other crap on the plastic. The other reason I don't subscribe is comming home and finding the mag 1/2 out of the mailbox with 6 inches of wet snow on it. The plastic wrappers help and I'd pay extra for them but the only ones I've seen with the wrap I got in the store! We have the technology, how about using it!

Dr. J I remember that once before, in a not so distance past, u once performed surjury to a Rod n Custom mag with the same growth on it.... the results were tragic, the patient was lost......

I let my subscription run out.

That pretty much stopped the annoying ads.

I hated missing issues and routinely getting them long after they had hit the newsstands. The money saved by subscribing did not make up for the frustration incurred.

I still like the magazine, but their subscription flaws drove me away.

use Lift Off or Goof Off

mop it over the stick-on label and it will come right off.

don't get carried away or you'll take the ink off the paper too.

Skate Fink, same thing happened to me about 3 years ago with the glue shit, I wrote a letter to R&amp;C to the guy in charge ( Nigel somebody or other ) and they sent me a new copy, all the way to here in OZ. BTW I did not have a subscription, anyhow, I don't buy anymore, for all the reasons previously stated.

Because the coupon that is the "special" binding of the magazine is self addressed to;
Rod &amp; Custom PO BOX 420411 Palm Coast FL 32142-7308
They are the ones that fucked up my magazine.
That's why.
Probabaly some sub-distributor who's fucking up my magazine by buying a contract to print and distribute it from Primediaso they can get a cut off the extra sale.
All Primedia Inc. cares about is the $$$ obviously.

Oh and it's such a great "TWO for ONE" deal except the one costs $22.97 Seems they forgot that ONE sub costs $14.97 according to the loose coupons in the magazine.

I got one of those renewal covers on my December 2001 issue and torn it off. It didn't tear off the spine but left the glue and some of that paper so you can't read the spine information. Idiot subscription department!

Can't take it off. It's a special printing with no binding under the ad, just the glue and pages...

Anyone else get the same shit?

Yeah right, they've been sending me crap for the last 8 months and my subscription STILL hasn't run out. Luckily the defaced magazine I got had the "RENEW NOW!" thing glued just to the spine.

i don't know if it is a principle statement you're trying to make... but i'd just go buy a news stand copy without the offer on it.

i'm not trying to be a smart ass, really... i totally understand if "it is the principle" that keeps you from buying a new issue. but that would be my solution.

BigJim394

I tried a heat gun, but you are right, it will not come off the spine without leaving the magazine unbound. R&amp;C pushes their website...do they have a forum where you could lodge a complaint? If enough people ask for an "unmolested" copy to replace the one they got, they may finally get the me$$age.

A few years ago Newsweek magazine allowed an advertiser to put a particularly strong perfume sample insert in the magazine. They got so many complaints and subscription cancellations that they printed a letter at the front of a later issue vowing they would never allow "scented" inserts again.

Dr J, as long as you don't mind a different subscriber's name on the cover, you can have mine, since you collect them (if the glue doesn't ruin the cover).
While R&amp;C is one of my favorite mags, I'm no fan of their distribution dept. It's one thing to send a reminder maybe twice a subscription year, near when yer subscription runs out, but to constantly mail reminders is so annoying.
Yeah, I could not subscribe and buy it at the store, but it's cheaper this way, and hell it's fun to find the new issue in the mailbox. Just... not reminders.
'Nuff of my bitching. "I hear ya", lemme know if you need a better copy, Dr. J.

some things are better off un-sniffed...i can think of a few advertisers that I am quite thankful never thought of this ploy....as well as a few magazines that I am kinda glad dont have scratch &amp; sniff pages, and some that should...im not gonna mention any titles, as I am sure by now I have stirred up mental pictures of exactly what is goin thru my sick, twisted mind....

as for sticking on topic here, I would be pissed off beyond all description. those stick-on ads are the grandparents of POP-UP ads, in this one instance, genocide should have been used.

they are right, DrJ, the mag will send ya a new one if ya give 'em a holler...

Seems like that is a re-occuring situation. I payed for a years subscription and got jipped an issue. I did not think my sub ran out so I attempted to contact the magazine via e-mail. Tried by phone to...yeah, that was like pissing up a rope. It only took them three months to respond. Not to turn this into something else, BUT, it would have been nice to get a renewal notice. Even by e-mail as opposed to an actual mailing. I do not think my sub actually expired but being the knuckle head that I am I probably would have just renewed and thought nothing of it. Mistakes are made, hell I make too many almost every day, but, hoarkin' an issue off my sub and then giving me an attitude when I question it is a load. At this point I will not renew or resubscribe to the (deluxe) magazine, or any magazine, that does not value it's customers. The new issue of R&amp;C did the same thing to those who like to collect the mag. Slapping that "last chance" thing on/over the cover sucked.

I recieved a Rodders Journal that got the pages all folded over in the binding process. I was sick. I called them and they sent out a replacement no charge. It's worth a try.

If they were only like coins where a misprint is more valuable than a perfect copy. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Really I do sympathize with ya Doc.

What urks me is getting renewal notices 2 months after I have signed up for 2-3 years. They need to keep better records of who they need to send renewal notices to. Ilet the sub run out because of this. R&amp;C is the worlds worst about this. But my renewal was coming from Boulder, CO.

Hey Dr.J!

Bummer about your cover man, I feel your pain. Especially because I shot that cover, so I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to it. For those of you who don't know, the guys working for the magazine don't have ANYTHING to do with your circulation problems. In fact, a totally different company handles that end of the business, they subcontract out to Primedia. So... if you have a problem contact them and raise holy hell. Of course if you have a really mangled issue let me know, I can probably do something about that.

DrJ- If you're going to be at the Mooneyes Christmas Party come find me (I'll be near my modified) and I'll give you a new issue... wouldn't want ya burning your house down trying to melt the glue with a heat gun.

Scribe,

Great cover shot. Looks like about 10-11AM facing North, with overcast sky diffusing just enough light to see the shaded sides of the cars?
Am I close?
Is that the bridge they used in "Beatlejuice"?
I'm not going to be at the mooneyes party this year because wife's company HONDA HRA is paying for brunch and dinner and all day at DISNEYLAND tomorrow!
But thanks for the offer.

What Email should I use to get to Circulation? other than the one for Florida in the magazine that is, they are the culprit.
Or should I just use rodcustom@primedia.com ?

Yea, I know which level of the magazine is to blame, and it's not any of the people who make it at R&amp;C

DRJ. It is areal problem to me, too.
Since my subscripti0on is not up till June 04, It really bothers me.
I peeled the cover off and did not destroy the magazine, but the adhesive is still there with a portion of the "Cover ad"

Think I will soak it in unsulphered molassis for a year.

Think that will clear it right up.
