Oil pump primer with a GM window crank post to turn it manually, if it had a handle on it?

Yours is a little more high tech than mine. I didn't turn the head off my distributer. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
You win the prize alright, you don't roach your mill on first startup.
I wondered who would throw that one in.

Manual turning works fine--on mine, I just drove a cheap socket over the stub of shaft at the top so I could turn it over with a ratchet. You can feel the fressure go up as you watch it climb on the gauge. On Chevies, remember to turn the engine over a bit as you go, as some of the rockers are cut off from oil at all positions.
I removed the drive gear completely and replaced it with a short piece of tubing pinned on. Saved grinding and gave me a spare gear. Everything was free, since I picked a distributor that had just been run over by the crane at the junkyard.

Why not just make a piece that fits into the end of the distributor shaft where the rotor goes? Then you can leave your dizzy in the motor...

metalshapes, I would be surprised if oil ever made it to the top end without the shaft housing to direct the oil.

Gr8ballsofir, of course you realize that would not work with the gears engaged.

I made mine from a junk HEI unit, a sawsall and grinder made quick work of the teeth and housing and I tacked the little ring back on the shaft at the top to keep it all together.

I have a right angle drill that I hook up to it, letting it run for about ten minutes with the valve covers off so I can see the oil at the top end.

Yep, it sure did...
But I'm going to check exactly how the oil gallery's are routed, just to make sure.

metalshapes,

I don't doubt you,

and it wouldn't surprise me if I was surprised if you know what I mean http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Isn't there an open oilway that the normal distributor blocks when inserted? And as you say, no distributor shaft, no oil feed to certain dark and nasty places http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif On Chevies anyway.
