View Full Version : Tech Question: Flairs & Flairing

I'm running new fuel line on the Plymouth to feed the new dual carb setup. The old line was 5/16" hard line with inverted flairs everywhere. Space is tight, and they don't seem to make inverted flair fittings in a couple of configurations I need, so the question is: In a low-pressure situation like a fuel feed, can I mix-and-match inverted with standard flair? My understanding is that invert is necessary for higher pressure situations like brakes. They're both 45 degree, so will they work together? I guess I could just run a bunch of rubber flex with barbs and hose clamps, but that's not the look I was after...

As long as you use the correct adapters you can mix 'em. As far as inverted flare for High pressure, how many brake systems use a regular flare??? A whole bunch! That seems pretty high pressure to me! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

its my understanding that the double flare(inverted flare),is designed for just a little "give" when torquing the fitting, and as a by product allow the already stretched area to not extrude or twist and prevents the flare from cracking.that said,a single flare will work,as long as its in good shape, and not asked to handle a lot of pressure,(would guesstimate under 100 psi).its used on thousands of natural gas fittings .

Just don't try double flairing stainless lines. They'll crack, now or later. Stainless needs a 37 deg. single flair.

Just to clarify: I wanna run a flared line into an inverted flair fitting, and vice versa. That's cool, right?

BTTT before I do something dumb...Invert flair tube (ie. pre-flaired brake line) into (regular)flair fitting is OK, right? And regular flair tube into invert type fitting is also OK??

One of the problems you might find is that not all fittings have threads deep enough to properly crush a single flair. If you try to tighten the line nut untill it seals you may split the fitting. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!
