Okay here is one of today's questions

Chet Herberts chopped and slightly channeled 32 Ford Deuce four door sedan. It was a hiboy with a Jimmy motor in it and set up for hand controls etc as Chet was in a wheel chair. Later it ran a set back V8.

Where is this car now?

Does anyone have any neat pictures or copies of magazine articles?

I don't know where it's been since the early '60s, but at that time it had a radically setback flattie and was owned by Billy Gray (kid TV actor on Father Knows Best, with a second career as a Class A Speedway bike racer).

Not much help in answer to your question, I realize, but possibly interesting to somebody. That was a neat car.

It had features in both Hop Up and HRM (with Rex Burnett cutaway) in the early '50s, when it was still Chet's car.

Well I didnt know that. Thanks for the info. I have seen the Hop Up reprint but not the Hot Rod mag

4eva4banger, I gather that you're a young guy, but you have clearly done your homework well. You ask a lot of interesting questions about very interesting cars. Your taste appears to be excellent.

What is your own ride?

Thank you 50fraud. I am 23 and I have built a 29 closed cab Model A pick up with a banger motor and a T5 trans. It runs a z'd frame and no fenders. 16" steelies on 5.50 and 7.50 Firestones, dropped Model A axle, hydraulic drum brakes all round and left hand drive.

How about you? WHat have you got?

Greg, here is some pics from the march '52 issue of Hot Rod and the Rex Burnett cut away drawing from that issue.

As you probably know, before Chet built the sedan, he ran fuel Harleys, here is one.

i agree with 50 Fraud, you ask questions about some great cars, keep it up!

Of interest on the sedan, it was set up to run on Butane with a special injection set up for alcohol.

The GMC was 296 c.i. and had a Buick Dynaflow tranny.

Thanks for the images from HOT ROD. I was not aware of the fuel Harleys though. Thanks for the kind words.

50 Fraud......a rear 3/4 photo of your pickup is my screen saver at work...greets me every morning and flat cheers me up for the day.
I've always wanted to build a 50 fraud myself but I wanna confuse the issue a little more by using 50 crestliner trim. A lift-off top is a possibility too but it'd take about 4 guys to lift it off and on.
You gots nice stuff. Black is beautiful.

OK 4eva, you got me on this one. I never knew that Chet Herbert had a deuce 4-dr. powered by an inliner- on butane no less! I am going to talk to a bunch of the guys I hang with here in Rochester. We call ourselves the "Gimps and Geezers" for obvious reasons. You know more trivia than all of us put together (mostly 'cause we can't remember shit). But, I think you should be an honorary member that we could contact when one of those senior moments hits. We'll promise not to call if we get lost two blocks from our home. Perhaps, you could represent us as an affiliate-we could refer to you as the"G&G-Southern Group" Way South!!!

O&K thank you again, I would honoured to be a member of your group!

50Fraud - Question on your 36.

What kind of wheels are you running? I doesn't look like they are scalloped. I have some 39 3/4 ton wheels that are not scalloped, but they still have four vents. Yours look solid.

Are those 38 std caps?

I like your taste in vehicles. Very nice.

50frauds cars look right on! I have trouble loading pics on here. I might know my stuff about old cars but these computors can still be a challenge for this kid!

Thanks Lowlife, Rocky, 4eva4, and Neal for the compliments.

4eva4: I like your truck, and I like the photo. The corrugated building is a great background for it. Have you seen Keith Weesner's chopped '29?

Shoebox - ZZ3, 700R4, Nova clip
'36 - blown 292 inch flathead, early Ford running gear
'34 truck - 265 that was in the '36 when I bought it, otherwise all early Ford

NealinCA: My rims are the same as yours (they have 4 slots), although the rears have been widened to 7". I thought the hubcaps were '39 Standard, but you could well be right. Hardly anybody uses '38-'39 caps, so I've never been quite sure.

50fraud, thanks. Keith Weesners truck was quite an influence! It is now in Japan.

To my knowledge this is a 38 Std:

And these are 39 Std's:

I have a set of the 39's, but I really like the long V-8 on the 38's.

Do you have any close-up pics of the wheels on your 36? Front or rear.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programing.

Hey no problem - its all good!

I will be running 39 Deluxe wheels on my next project

NealinCA, if your ID is correct, mine are '38s. There is another variety of wide-5 hubcap with the same V8 logo as these, but a much larger stainless center, leaving a painted ring around the outside that is only 1"+ wide. I had thought that they were '38s, and that the smaller ones were '39s. The big ones are very rust-prone, and I have found almost none that are useable. I thought the ones you identify as '39s were aftermarket (well, I have some of that design that I know are aftermarket, but they may just have knocked Ford off).

I do have a picture of the wheel, but it's on my computer at home. I'll post one later today.

The "bell-shaped" ones are 38 Deluxe.

I just looked up in a Early Ford V8 club book on 38/39 Fords. They show the hubcaps like yours as 38 Std and the ones with the smaller, bulkier V8 as 39 std. I do agree that you see an awful lot of the aftermarket, chrome hubcaps in the 39 std style.

There is a great shot of Chet's car in the new Rodders Journal. It is in an article for a best of Rod and Custom book they are doing.

Say is was in the june '55 R & C and was then owned by Lonnie Askin with a flathead in place of the 6.

4eva4, please pardon this digression.

NealinCA, thanks for clarifying the '38/'39 distinction. Here's a picture of a stock width (16x5) 3/4 ton wheel with the '38 cap. Although they're hard to see, there are five (oops, not 4) slots:

...and here's another, widened to 7". Amazing how the cap appears to be a different color, huh?

Yeah, what is up with that? I take it you made a change.

I do like those wheels. Do many people notice the lack of scallops?

Thanks for the pics.

Just funnin'. Yeah, I decided to repaint the black part of the caps in maroon, and shot the pictures so I could compare them side-by-side. I haven't yet repainted all the caps as I haven't finished taking out the dings.

No, hardly anybody notices, but I like them much better than the passenger car wheels. They are rare! I looked for them for more than a year, finally running an ad in the Early V-8 Times, and had the amazing good luck to find a set of 4 NOS in PA!
