With all the engine and tranny swaps goin on, pilot bushings need to be changed sometimes. Easy removal--Cut about an 8 inch wood dowel,(broom handle) smoothe one end down so it just slides inside the bushing. Pack center of bushing with grease, insert dowel, give a couple taps with hammer, bushing usually comes out easily, to be used again if needed........OLDBEET

That trick works GREAT!!
(a wad of wet paper towel packed in there works in place of grease, too...I've done it that way!)

Interesting Hack I guess whatever displaces space "hydraulically". When I did my Plymouth this summer I actually bought a little removal tool which is a threaded cone with a grease xerk on one end. Screw it into the pilot bushing and start pumping in grease. Isn't really the Mcguyver approach but it worked really well.

You can also tap it with a 5/8 or 3/4 tap, and screw a bolt into it to get it out. In an emergency I have used a socket that fits tight installed on an extension backward with grease in place of a dowel.
You can make a clutch pilot to install your new clutch from a 3/8 socket that fits the bearing, a 3/8 deep socket that fits in the clutch spline, and a piece of 3/8 square key stock. A little vinyl tape holds it together.

the local mechanic down the road from me uses a slide hammer to pull the pilot bearing out sometimes. somehow, he uses a couple washers and a bolt and then attaches the bolt to the slide hammer. i would think that if you drilled a couple holes in the pilot bearing, then screwed a machine screw in, you could attach to the screws and yank that sucker out.

My slide hammer puller kit has a couple of small "fingers" (look like puller jaws, but the "hooks" face out. The jaws are inserted into the hole (pilot bushing) and a knob is turned to spread the fingers out. Then the slide hammer is used to "pop" the bushing out. I use it often to pull bearing races out. The "fingers" can be inserted into a 1/2 inch dia. opening.

I tried the grease trick...grease went everywhere when it squirted out between the dowel and the bearing. Sorta-like holding your thumb over a water hose. I was a pretty piece of work. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Throw a rag over it to catch the spray.
