Does anybody have any idea where I can find a reverb unit for my ride? I would like to run it with a modern radio...

They were common in mid-60's Chrysler Imperials. There are places that part out Imperials and would probably have some.
Check out:

Look for links to parts sources.

I have an old timer freind who has
one on his shelf, with the wiring and
dash knobs, I asked about it he said
he wants $150.
If your interested send me a PM.
They are/were monaural so if you have stereo, (who doesnt?) you will need one for each channel.

What's a reverb unit exactly?
Makes the music or voice sound like "Hello-ello-llo-lo-o...."
Probably the earliest "effects' made for guitar amps and they made units for car radios in the mid 60s
I think I remember, you could et them as options from the factory in '64 GM cars.

Doc... that's interesting... didn't think of that. Do the units have speaker outputs? How do I get it in line with a radio then? Does it go before the radio or after? In other words... antena to reverb/amp unit to radio to speakers. or is it... antena to radio to reverb/amp unit to speakers. My intuition tells me that the signal goes to the reverb from the reverb unit. I am trying to figure out how they get the reverb effect to the music before the speaker. Did the reverb unit come as part of the radio? Are they seperate? Is it possible to use a reverb tank from an guitar amplifier or something similar and aply to a car audio sound system? Any help would be appreciated.

what about a guitar pedal one?they take a 9V battery and operate at line voltage....but why?so every guitar track sounds like dick dale?

Erh...yeah, the only kind of "reverb unit" I could think of is the guitar pedal type, and apparently this is the same thing!
I definitely can't see the allure of having that in my car

The effect of reverb would sound like the sound of the music in American Grafitti... although that was done differently... they just blasted some speakers throughout the town... but I do like that effect... it makes it feel old timey to me... if I can set it up so the effect can be turned off it would really cool as well. I got the idea from my home stereo... it has a surround sound button on it that basically just adds a slight amount of reverb to the sound. Really cool in my book. And no it doesn't make everything sound like dick dale. Take into consideration that every room you stand in gives it's own reverb effect. empty rooms give more... bigger rooms give more... so it is a natural effect.

ok I get it.I reckon the guitar pedal ones would work,if your car stereo has an amp out put,run that to the pedal then output from the unit to the amp.you could mount it on the floor, and switch it with your foot like a headlight dipswitch!thatd be cool http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I've got an old AFCO reverb, 2"x10" with woodgrain and 2 knobs, reverb tone and ft-rr, two pair of speaker wires and a power wire. Mounting is by two slots on sides. PM me an address and I'll send it for shipping plus $10.
The reverb I had in my 50 Ford sedan mounted under the dash and had a knob on it that controlled how much echo you got.
Most times a little bit was just right.
The trick to it was the reverb fed the rear seat speaker.
No reason you couldn't have a speaker off to the side, but the centralized rear seat speaker in conjunction with the better quality 6 x 9" center speaker in the dash was a good combo.
Got a good magazine store in your town?
One that sells a large variety of mags?
Pick up one or two of the electronics mags.
The ones that have schematics and articles on how to build your own electronic stuff.
Most times all the parts are available from Radio Shack.
You'll find that most of them have back issues available or you can order a particular schematic with written text.
I have seen reverbs in them.
Seems too that Guitar Player mag used to run an electronics column where the guy knocked out his own effects goodies with readily available components.
Don't go telling me this electric/electronic stuff is difficult.
If you can lay out a lawn sprinkler system you can do electricity.
Specially so since you're only laying down one wire or component at a time.

Here's a pic of the guts of a reverb unit on ebay. Looks like they run anywhere from $10 to $200. WWS

All this time I thought my mom was telling me a little bit of a fish story when she would talk about this. My grandfather was awesome at electronics so I believed her a little more than I would have maybe otherwise. I'm only 26 also so I still haven't seen everything by a long shot too. She had one in her 60 chrysler but I don't know if it was stock. Now I have to go appologize to her, lol.

You've got my attention C-9... I'm gonna havta look at a schematic... there shouldn't be much to a reverb unit really... looking at that photo above has me wondering... what in the heck all those caps are for. In fender amps they basically run the sound in and out of the spring which gives the effect. Interesting...

I bought a 8 (could be 2 rows of 4) spring reverb unit out of a Wurlitzer organ on ebay for $5, I was hoping to be able to find a way to wire it up to the radio in the Ford later on. If anybody come up with a simple generic wiring diagram for one, let me know.
