Some of you may not be aware of this, but you can buy u-joints for driveshafts that are different dimensions to fit two different yokes. This can be a big help in installing different transmission/driveshaft/rear end combos. Measure your respective yokes and head on over to a GOOD parts house with those dimensions to mix and match. On my Bro's fine '49 we were able to hook up a Maverick rear end to a Turbo 400 tranny with a driveshaft of unknown origin, selected on the basis of length, merely by selecting the u-joints that fit each units yoke. And the best part of all is that I've been a (so called) professional auto mechanic for 30+ years and had never before seen this. An old guy selling parts up in the country told my bro the trick. Hope this is some help to someone out there.

I wish I had known this, I had to put a new piece on the back to match the maverick 8" when I shortened my driveshaft for the A.

Thanks

I ran into this problem when we built our drag car. Turbo 350 to dodge 8 3/4.....find a shop that shortens drive shafts, they had the one we needed but they aren't that cheap...we paid 80 bucks.

When I first made the driveshaft for my T bucket I used a camero driveshaft,(its a TH350 with a 67 mustang 8"rear)I had to buy 3 U-joints,2 for the camero D/S then one for the ford 8", Then I had to take 2 caps off one of the u-joints & put it on the rear of the driveshaft, this was a pain in the ass.I blew the driveshaft & had to make a new one so I got a 1976 Nova 6cyl shaft, shorten it & used stock u-joints for that driveshaft & the chevy u-joint matched up to the ford 8" perfectly!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

also when dealing with this stuff, don't forget to check out 4x4 shops, as well as places that advertise something like powertrain components, etc.

also keep them in mind for things like balancing, these guys can balance just about anything that spins! its their job! most any decent size town has a shop that specializes in this.
