we used 2 part foam to look at shapes for rear we might like.
easy to do and shape , alot better then spending the time to do it in steel ,then decide you do not like it.

Cole you do some outstanding, no incredible metal work.. Can you explain the foam thing.. do you make a form and spray it one, let it rise, then cut/sand to shape?

It truly is a shame that the car will get painted. The only comfort in knowing all that metalwork will be painted over is the fact that Cole's paint jobs are equally outstanding.

Looks like you forgot to shave the door hinges. Good call.

Yet another car that gives you that.....i want one feeling!

cole
12-07-2003, 07:24 PM
Thanks for the words.

Foam- I use foam from hardware store for insulation . and 2 part expanding foam from fiberglass store (boatyard)

on the rear there ,I cheated using a form by getting a chunk of foam board close then holding board to body and pouring (easy does it) the 2 part in the crack letting it glue my board and fill voids at the same time , stuff shapes with wood saw then 40 grit, can smooth to 120 grit if desired.
do not use out of rattle can of expanding foam ,it never dries without air ,so down in cracks you will have a soft gooey core .

If I may be so bold as to make some styling comments -- at risk of having the custom wizards here hand me my ass -- I'd want to see the headlights a touch more slippery and parked a little closer to the fenders.

I don't feel that a faired-in housing bridging the fenders and grille-surround, as it was done on some of the better cars in the past, is necessary. Actually, as nice as that treatment was back then, it's become a bit cliche by now.

How about narrowing the '36 grille about 3-4 bars on each side, making it a bit more vertical, and flanking it with close-in free-standing headlight housings shaped around '37-'38 Ford headlight lenses. Think of what's going on at the lower half of the '39 Deluxe grille to get you started in the right direction.

looking good! thanks for sharing the foam idea. was it really a 5 window? got any pics of how you did the rear roof corners? they look perfect. I would like to build new roof corners on my truck since after I chopped and sliced them they got a little lumpy.

Nice car there Cole. It's got some real STYLE.
But I have to laugh at the foam deal. Here in the midwest cars rust so bad I have seen people pump that foam in the rockers and rusted lowers on cars and then shape it up and bondo over it to make what LOOKS like a body.

Anyway that car is going to be awsome. Looks like it had a nice body to start with. And I also thought thats the one that started as a 5 window.

Boys (and girls),
Take a close look at that decklid and compare it to an original.
Ask Cole about that BEAUTIFUL and PERFECT grille.
Find out what that car really started out as.
Watch what he does with those headlights.

Better yet, get your ass to his shop and take a closer look. Then lower your head, realize that you're not worthy, accept the fact that every little detail has been thoroughly thought out and that everything you see on that car is exactly as it should be, and slowly back out of his shop like one of 17 wives out of the master's bedroom.

Jesus Cheeerist, for once just spend your time asking how he did it instead of telling him how he could start making it better. The worst part is, Cole is nice enough of a guy to actually make you feel like he's listening to you.

Cole:
Oh man, you're screwing the thing up big-time.
You gotta get some Mercedes E-class headlights frenched into the fenders, the grille needs to be machined from billet strontium, and that bare metal needs to be covered up ASAP. I know in that rendering the thing's black, but that's totally, totally wrong. You need to paint the thing hot pink and then have Himsl do some crazy, garish flame job. Then I'm thinkin' you find some early Nineties Boyds to replace those horrid steelies. I mean, it'll be a nice nostalgic element, after all that '80s nostalgia thing is already played, with the acceleration of culture it's only a matter of time before 90s nostalgia kicks in; you'll be ahead of the curve, boyo. And dude, that steering wheel is lame. Have you seen those ones now that're aluminum but they look like they're made out of polished silver fire? You *totally* need one of those. Have you given any consideration to back-halving the thing? Maybe taking it in a pro-street direction? And lose the skirts. Skirts are for trannies and Scotsmen. So unless you wanna put plaid pink triangles on 'em, ditch the suckers. And dude, fuck the 302. You've gotta get an LS1 in there or I'm pretty sure you'll never *ever* get to do a SEMA project car. Oh, and you should stop doing your own work, too. Start having Barry White build all of your cars for you. You *obviously* have no clue what you're doing pal. I mean, I still like you and all, but if it's romance you're after, I swear...if you finish that car the way you're going with it, your girlfriend's totally gonna leave you and Metallica's gonna make a video where they blow the thing up.
Just trying to steer you in the right direction and spare you the heartache...
Rock.
Dave.

I agree it will be a shame to paint that and hide all that unfucking real metalwork. For all the newer guys, yes, it definitely started as a 5 window. I was noticing that decklid area before I got to Stoner's post and it is pretty amazing.

Cole, did you build that steering wheel as well? Very nice interpretation of the banjo.

Hey Cole,
That car is BAD MOTHERF*&KING ASS! Kirk is a damn lucky guy.
Thought I'd toss my idea for headlights in...even though I'm sure you thought of it already. How about a pair of '47 Chev truck buckets? French in the lens and make the lens small and flat like E&J with a tint. Red would be cool but against the law I'm sure. Maybe blue...Make a rounded edge to meet the lens 1" inside the bucket.
Trim the bucket to flow on the fender, then stretch the bucket to flow about 6" longer then stock. Been done but you can put that Cole spin on it. Here is a pic of kinda what I mean. Just my $.02 of an idea...
Thanks Cole for the pix!!!

The party was good. Since most of the Alameda/Sacto kids didn't wanna venture to Benicia in the rain and everyone else had that gnarly flu that's going around, the turnout basically was my Contra Costa/Solano friends. Still, it was a good time, there was an adequate liquor supply and Philippe and I ended up shutting everyone down. Score one for the East Bay Pirates! Dude, Cole. Build a moped and I'll make you an honorary member. I'm at work on That Thing of Ours. I wanna make it purty so's to wow the kids.

That's Niiice! That is indeed some beautiful work Cole!

Interesting that Some people have immense talent and the means to make it into metal.
Others have spectacular ideas and they'll never have the means or talent to produce results from their ideas.
Still others have the talent and would still suggest their ideas to other builders.
I love this place for bringing them all together.
But I'll keep my singular good idea to myself so those who can OBSERVE Real Talent up close in person
don't have something to whine about...

Maybe part of what makes Cole so good, is an open mind and an ability to listen, and Think, without jumping to quick criticism for the gaul of someone to suggest another idea to him which May even compliment the thousands he's already incorporated into one of his works...

Hey Cole , with that being said I would like to add something small. It seems that on most 36s that are skirted like this that alot of guys miss the contour in the transition from the running boards to the rear fenders and the flow of this great line on the car becomes lost . it only seems apparent from this angle when I see it and as I'm sure you and others see it too ,it does happen alot.I have always admired the fluid simplicity of the work your shop has turned out , so , I'll leave it at that . Looks awesome .keep us posted. thanx . swaZZie
