I went today to pick up a few parts for Barnett. The parts came from an 83 year old friend way up in the hills. This old dude always has 2-3K in his wallet and he restores Fords as fast as he can get them done. He welds upside down like a pro, builds his own Flatheads, and stitches his own upholstery. Truly one of the old guys that knows everything. He lives in a nasty, 40x40 shack.
His collection includes a '35 sedan, '36 coupe, '48 Lincoln, '39 sedan, '40 convert, 41 sedan, a Model A coupe, sport coupe, and roadster, '50 coupe and a '52 Chevy convert. All are nice restorations in a building 100 times nicer than his house - seriously.
His next project is a '36 Ford Phaeton he talked a widow out of recently. The car makes me weak. I'd kill for it. When he finishes all it will need to suit me is a hot Flatty and a dropped stance.
What's killing me though is the fact that he won't be around forever and his sons will get it all - if he even has a will. They know what the cars mean to their Dad. They don't care about them but they'll keep them locked up forever. What worries me even more is the fact that if he doesn't have a will, the state will take it all. Yeah, I want his car, but I care about the old dude too. He is a good friend.
That '36 sitting in that building up in the hills haunts me.
It sucks.
