buy holley 94's instead, they're cheaper and better.if the throttle shafts are worn a little you can put o-rings on'em to seal'em up-george

If you wanna save some money and maybe hassle go with the Holley/ Ford 94. They cost a quarter of the Stroms. You can tell one from the other by the fuel inlet pretty quick. Stroms have the fuel inlet at the bowl housing and Ford/Holleys at the top of the bowl. Happy hunting.

Strombergs have bushings and are less likely to have worn shaft than 94's. Look at front of top casting where it meets main body over the float. This area is commonly warped. Greasy filthy carbs are better than dry and crusty, ones with obvious water exposure are worst. Complain loudly about each fault you find as a defense against the seller's whining litany of "Last week, one of these went for $$$$$ on EBay". Worn shafts will cost to repair and should drastically reduce value, but probably won't actually work as a bargaining tool because all sellers are now convinced that Strombergs are golden and because people constantly buy them on EBay without even being able to check the shafts.
Missing hardware is bad on Strombergs, as everything costs. Find out about base/linkage differences between Models 40/48 and 97/81--mixed parts are common, and this should be a basis for bargaining. 48's are cheaper than 97's, 81's have become gold. Before complaining too much about the state of the world, remember that parts stores routinely charge more for bad rebuilds of carbs for worthless 70's cars than the high prices seen for Strombergs...

And after all is said and done go with 94's for a driver; 97's are for show. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Heck, most car people cant tell the difference anyway.
94 parts including oversize throttle shafts/bushings are readily available. In fact just about everything for the 94 is available brand new at reasonable prices.
